Release Dr Hussam Abu Safia immediately!
It’s been more than 1,000 days of genocide and 500 days of Abu Safia’s detention. We need urgent action to end both.
Dr Hussam Abu Safia’s life is in imminent danger. This is what his lawyer Nasser Odeh said after visiting him on Thursday in an underground interrogation facility, part of Israel’s Nitzan Prison.

If we do not act immediately, Gaza may lose yet another brilliant doctor, and Israel may get away with yet another brutal crime.

Abu Safia, a Palestinian paediatrician and hospital director, first captured the global spotlight on December 27, 2024. That day footage surfaced of him wearing a white doctor’s coat and walking through the bombed-out rubble of what was once a northern Gaza street towards an armoured vehicle where Israeli soldiers were waiting for him.

He was not surrendering an army; he was surrendering the small but critical Kamal Adwan Hospital after 85 days of siege as his staff and patients were forced to leave at gunpoint. A hospital that should have been protected by international law, international leaders and the United Nations but instead was attacked, deprived of medicine, electricity and supplies.

At least 30 people were killed and 20 injured in the hospital when Israeli troops stormed it on December 6, 2024. When his teenage son Ibrahim was killed outside the hospital, Abu Safia said the funeral prayers himself before rushing back to his child patients.

The photo and video of Abu Safia’s last moments of freedom were shared globally on social media, capturing the attention of millions and demonstrating the limits of social media activism. The global spotlight didn’t change his or Gaza’s fate or the politics of the rogue state of Israel.

Abu Safia is not a “terrorist” nor a “combatant”. If anything, he is the defender of life who stands by his patients: Palestinian children under Israeli occupation, targets of bombing, sniper fire and the sadistic Israeli siege causing widespread starvation, thirst, disease and premature death among them.

Israel claims Abu Safia is “affiliated with Hamas” and has detained him under the Unlawful Combatants Law. No evidence has been presented to prove these allegations, no criminal indictment has been brought, and no independent observer has been able to examine the intelligence said to justify his detention.

On June 10, Abu Safia was finally seen in public after more than 500 days of brutal imprisonment. He appeared via videolink from the dreaded Nafha Prison during an Israeli Supreme Court hearing in Jerusalem. He was handcuffed and shackled, looked emaciated and unwell, but he had a calm and dignified posture. Less than a month later, his lawyer visited him in Nitzan Prison. He had trouble recognising his client because he was so badly beaten and was losing consciousness during the meeting.

Abu Safia is one of hundreds of Palestinian medical workers whom Israel has detained. Fourteen doctors, including him, remain in Israeli detention camps and prisons. Two have not made it out alive, and 1,700 healthcare workers have been killed.

Why are Palestinian medics and hospital staff arrested, detained, tortured and killed by Israel? For decades, Israeli occupation forces have been targeting Palestinian healthcare, in violation of international law, to promote ethnic cleansing and collective punishment as part of their settler-colonial project. The Israeli epistemicide aims to erase all signs of Palestinian knowledge, infrastructure and civil society.

To cover up their crimes, the Israeli military has claimed that Gaza’s hospitals are military hideouts or “command centres” for the Palestinian armed resistance. To date, they have not been able to produce independent, verifiable proof of this. I have myself worked in various hospitals in Gaza for 25 years, mostly at al-Shifa in Gaza City, and never ever seen any proof of such use of either hospitals or ambulances.

The arrest, abuse and torture of Palestinian medics and other staff from Gaza’s hospitals aim to force false confessions of such use of hospitals in Gaza. Unsuccessfully. My colleagues have never yielded. They have stood by the truth.

But there is another Israeli motivation for detaining and mass-killing medical workers as well. Hospital staff bear witness and are directly involved in documenting Israeli war crimes. Since the start of the genocide, paediatricians like Abu Safia have raised the alarm about Israel’s purposeful targeting of Palestinian children with the aim of extermination.

What they have said all along was finally captured in a recently released UN report that concluded that there was clear evidence of “Israel’s deliberate and direct targeting of Palestinian children” and the destruction of “the essence of childhood”.

More than 24,000 of Gaza’s children have been killed, an average of one Palestinian child killed by Israeli occupation forces every hour for 1,000 days.

As of September, at least 1,009 of the killed children were babies or toddlers. Nearly half (450) of these babies were born and killed during the war. At least 42,011 children have been injured.

One million Palestinian children remain under the sadistic Israeli siege, homeless, food insecure and without access to safe drinking water, regular schooling or proper medical care. The killing and maiming of Gaza’s children continues on a daily basis.

A senior Gaza paediatrician recently described to me the life of Gaza’s schoolchildren thus:

“The most important tasks that school students perform every morning are: firstly, the search for water; secondly, the search for food at food distribution centres; and thirdly, collecting some waste that can be used as kindling. … So every morning, you find hundreds of children rummaging through the garbage, searching for anything that can be used to start a fire.”

Like the killed and starved children of Gaza, Abu Safia is a prominent symbol of Israel’s rogue nature. That is why, the Israeli authorities continue to torture him and keep him in solitary confinement while Israeli courts deny his appeals for release.

My Palestinian colleagues in Gaza are not just calling for Abu Safia’s release, for humanitarian relief for hospitals and for an end to the targeting of medical workers. They are demanding an immediate end to the occupation and siege and the restoration of the basic conditions that make health possible: human security, dignity, food, water, justice and the protection of civilian life. The root problem in Gaza now, as it was 1,000 days ago, is the United States-supported Israeli colonial occupation, the sadistic siege, structural violence and apartheid.

Neither an international band-aid with a few Israeli-controlled visiting international medical teams nor international empty lip service with passive condemnation will change the situation. The only way forward from a preventive medical perspective is harsh formal international sanctions and isolating boycotts of Israel to stop this genocide, end the occupation and save lives.

Time is running out. History will judge us. There are no excuses.

Do something, do more – or be complicit.

This is our responsibility; this is the responsibility of each Western politician, parliament and government. Everyone can do their share. Be active, protest and organise solidarity and support for the just struggle and resistance of the Palestinian people.

Seventeen years ago during the 2009 Israeli war on Gaza, I shouted from al-Shifa Hospital:

“We wade in death, blood and amputees. Many children. Pregnant women. I have never experienced anything this horrible. Now we hear tanks. Tell it, pass it on, shout it. Anything. DO SOMETHING! DO MORE! We’re living in the history books now, all of us!”

Do something! Do more! has never been more imperative.

GENOCIDE AND EUROVISION: NRK Fails Its Duty

For those who still doubt: Israel's president Herzog was crystal clear in his thanks to EBU (European Broadcasting Union) – and NRK's "neutral" support:
"I want to thank all those who have stood up for Israel. This decision shows solidarity, community, and cooperation."

Does NRK’s leadership think that a lie, if repeated enough times, will eventually be accepted as the truth?

"A nation committing genocide cannot continue to sing. A world that sees a nation committing genocide cannot sing with them, nor accept the fact that this nation wishes to continue singing as if nothing has happened."
This was written by the renowned Israeli Jewish journalist Gideon Levy in September in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz about Israel’s participation in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC).

Lies and Leadership
Does NRK’s leadership think that a lie, if repeated enough times, will eventually be accepted as the truth?
They certainly repeat without shame their contradictory, imprecise, and untenable arguments about "neutrality" and "reputation" to defend Norway’s failure to call for Israel’s exclusion from ESC once again.
Broadcasting Director Vibeke Fürst Haugen told Aftenposten that she supports the changes made to protect the competition’s "neutrality and reputation" (sic!) at Ebu’s general assembly this week, repeating nonsensical arguments about NRK’s opposition to a cultural boycott of Israel because it would "undermine NRK’s credibility as an independent news provider."
But wait a minute: Can we also not trust NRK’s news coverage of the fighting against Russia's occupation of Ukraine? After all, NRK took the lead as early as February 2022 in calling for a cultural boycott of Russia in the same song competition, the day after Russia's invasion, a boycott that NRK still supports.

Difficult Sport: Objectivity and Neutrality
Of course, NRK, like any other serious news outlet, is obliged to be objective, knowledge-based, and follow journalistic principles. But it seems that the national broadcaster fails to distinguish between objectivity and neutrality.
When NRK chooses to remain neutral regarding ongoing, bloody violations of international law and potential genocide, it fundamentally undermines its own credibility.
NRK is our public broadcaster, part of the Norwegian state apparatus, with the state as its sole owner and Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery (Labour Party) as the general assembly’s representative.
NRK is the state.
Norway ratified the Genocide Convention on July 22, 1949, shortly after it was adopted by the UN General Assembly as an unbreakable part of international law.
Norway – and Norwegian state institutions – have been bound by the convention for 76 years. This entails clear Norwegian obligations to prevent, avoid complicity in, and prosecute genocide.
NRK is an important state-owned institution that, regardless of claims of neutrality, cannot remain neutral on the most serious violations of international law.
NRK would, of course, not be biased by following international law.

Here are four brief pieces of advice to NRK’s sole owner, Culture Minister Jaffery, and Broadcasting Director Fürst Haugen:

1.⁠ ⁠Follow NRK’s duty to actively prevent genocide.
The core obligation for signatory states to the Genocide Convention is not just to refrain from committing genocide themselves, but to actively prevent it from happening, as established by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2007. This obligation is triggered when a state knows, or should know, that there is a serious risk of genocide. The duty to prevent is an obligation to act, not merely a moral responsibility. And more importantly: The Convention does not require that states first determine that genocide is actually occurring before these obligations are triggered. It is enough that there is a real and serious risk of genocide. This is undoubtedly met with Israel’s warfare in Gaza, which is being reviewed by the ICJ. NRK, as an integral part of the Norwegian state apparatus, must fulfill the same obligation. A cultural boycott is a lawful, peaceful, and recognized form of leverage against violations of international law, as Norway actively uses it against Russia (ESC, sports, cultural cooperation, etc.).

2.⁠ ⁠Follow the other countries that are now boycotting.
Norway must now follow Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Ireland and Iceland which this week showed political and moral courage and will boycott ESC 2026. A boycott does not mean Norwegian isolation, as successive Norwegian governments and foreign ministers often argue, especially when it comes to sanctions against Israel.

3.⁠ ⁠Follow the will of the people.
A clear majority believes Israel should not be allowed to participate in ESC 2026. In a survey by Norstat for NRK in November, 60% said NRK should vote no to Israel’s participation in ESC. In an online poll on the same topic, 80% said no to Israeli participation (over 33,000 participants). In a similar poll in Aftenposten now, following last week's developments, eight out of ten again say Norway should not participate in 2026 (as of writing, approximately 5900 votes).

4.⁠ ⁠Follow our artists and musicians.
Norwegian performers, composers, producers, and others in the music industry have taken moral and political responsibility in recent years. Repeatedly, they have led the way through concrete actions and organized resistance against NRK, with numerous petitions widely supporting a cultural boycott of Israel in ESC. Listen to them!

The World is Watching
We cannot sing along with official national representatives of Israel, which is committing genocide. They do this in broad daylight while the whole world watches, not primarily through NRK's neutral journalism and politics, but through local Palestinian journalists and ordinary Palestinians' continuous documentation.

Nothing is further from the broadcasting director’s alleged reputation management and neutrality than that NRK’s owner and leadership contribute to Norway once again behaving hypocritically and violating the Genocide Convention’s call to actively prevent potential genocides.

"I want to thank all those who have stood up for Israel. This decision shows solidarity, community, and cooperation."

Active and Solidary Support for Israel
NRK's support for Israel’s participation in ESC is thus not neutrality, but active and solidaristic support for Israel, not for Palestine, during an ongoing genocide.
We want Norway and NRK to stand up for our true core values. Lead the fight against apartheid, racism, and genocide, actively defend international law and human dignity.

When that job is done and Israel is stopped, then we can sing.

Torture and health worker complicity in Israeli detention sites

Multiple credible reports have emerged since 2023
detailing the torture and inhumane treatment of
Palestinians held in Israeli detention sites.1 -8 At least
75 Palestinians—including children—have died or
been killed while held in Israeli detention since
October 2023.9 These reports outline in graphic detail
the extent of state-sanctioned Israeli violence against
the Palestinian people and clearly expose repeated
violations of international law. Recently released
Palestinian hostages—held without charge—have
reported repeated beatings and horrific conditions
in Israeli prisons and detention sites.10 Several reports
also raise urgent concerns about the role of Israeli
health workers in acts of torture, and the failure to
prevent such acts.2 4 8 11

Patterns of torture and Israeli medical worker
complicity
Torture by Israeli soldiers and health workers is not
new. Depraved acts have been extensively
documented over several decades by United Nations
independent experts,12 and many human rights
organisations including the United Against Torture
Coalition,13 Amnesty International,14 Human Rights
Watch,15 and B’Tselem.16 By the Israeli government’s
own admission, torture has been used
“systematically” against Palestinian people.17
Historical and contemporary violations include
extreme physical, psychological, and sexual violence,
the denial of medical care, sleep deprivation, the use
of prolonged solitary confinement, attacks by dogs
under the control of their handlers, being urinated
on, and prolonged shackling of limbs—in some cases
causing injuries requiring amputation—along with
other forms of extreme and degrading treatment.1 -8

After a barbaric incident in July 2024, nine Israeli
soldiers were arrested in relation to their collective
participation in the torture and sexual assault of a
Palestinian man held in Israeli detention.18 So violent
was this attack that the man was left in critical
condition with ruptured intestines, broken ribs, and
lung trauma. Despite months of reports by the UN
and investigative journalists detailing the abuse of
Palestinian detainees, this was the first time that
Israeli soldiers had been arrested in relation to such
crimes.18 Elected members of the Israeli Knesset
joined protests in Israel in support of the soldiers,18 19
while a survey conducted by the Israeli Institute for
National Security Studies found that 65% of Israeli
Jews believed the arrested soldiers should not face
criminal charges, both of which highlight an
entrenched culture of wider political and public
support for such violence.20 The Israeli lawyer Yifat
Tomer-Yerushalmi who leaked the footage of the
attack has since been arrested for doing so, with the
government and several politicians accusing the
lawyer of damaging Israel’s global standing and casting Tomer-Yerushalmi’s efforts to prosecute
violence as a project to undermine the state.21

Particularly troubling is the longstanding and well
documented complicity of Israeli health workers in
torture,22 -25 wider detention practices, and the
overarching conditions of occupation and apartheid.
Both The BMJ and The Lancet have previously
reported on violations,24 25 which collectively
contravene a multitude of laws, conventions,
professional codes, and the core tenets of medical
ethics.26 27 Recent survivors of detention have
reported that Israeli health workers have been
physically violent towards detainees, knowingly
denied medical treatment, and neglected detainees’
injuries.2 4 8 11

Israeli whistleblowers have reported that detainees
at the Sde Teiman detention site in Israel were denied
analgesia during painful procedures, while doctors
working at the site were told not to write their names
on official documents, with one doctor revealing that
“officials feared they could be identified and charged
with war crimes.”28 29 Others have reported they
lacked the training for treatments and procedures
they were made to administer.29 An Israeli Ministry
of Health policy document reviewed by investigative
journalists working for the New York Times explicitly
stated that detainees treated at the Sde Teiman field
hospital should be blindfolded and handcuffed to
their beds.29 Drawing from extensive testimonials
and evidence, Physicians for Human Rights Israel
produced a report on medical ethics and Palestinians
in detention, concluding that“conditions and the
medical care standards at Sde Teiman are a low point
for medical ethics and professionalism,” and“that
the Israeli healthcare system has enabled the ethical
violations previously outlined concerning the medical
treatment of Gazan detainees.”30

Targeting Palestinian healthcare workers
The total number of Palestinians held in Israeli
prisons and detention sites exceeded 9100 as of
October 2025.31 Detailed reporting from Healthcare
Workers Watch Palestine published in July 2025
identified 405 cases of unlawful detention of
Palestinian healthcare workers since October 2023.32
At least five Palestinian healthcare workers are
known to have been killed in Israeli detention in the
same period.33 Among those killed was Adnan
al-Bursh, a respected orthopaedic surgeon who was
illegally detained by Israeli forces in December 2023.
He was held without charge and died in prison in
April 2024 after severe mistreatment.34 As of October
2025, at least 95 Palestinian healthcare workers
remained in detention,35 including Hussam Abu
Safiyeh, paediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan
Hospital, who was abducted and unlawfully detained
by Israeli forces in December 2024.36

These are not isolated incidents and must be understood in relation to evidence that suggests a broader strategy of targeting healthcare professionals, aimed at undermining the Palestinian healthcare system and maximising harm inflicted against the Palestinian
people.37 -39 This strategy extends beyond the detention and torture of healthcare workers, to the killing of more than 1700 Palestinian healthcare workers in Gaza since October 2023,40 and clearly documented patterns of systematic and targeted destruction of
healthcare infrastructure, including hospitals, clinics, ambulances, and essential medical equipment.41 -44 These acts constitute clear violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention, intended to protect medical personnel during armed conflict.45

Legal frameworks and ethical commitments
Complicity in torture represents not only a violation of several legal covenants and ratified agreements but also the profound betrayal of medical ethics,26 27 46 -48 transforming medicine from an act of care into one of repression. International ethical codes explicitly
forbid such involvement; the United Nations Principles of Medical Ethics deem participation in torture a gross violation,47 while the World Medical Association’s (WMA) International Code of Medical Ethics affirms that physicians must never exploit medical knowledge
to violate human rights.48 These standards represent a clear commitment to professional integrity and ethically responsible medical practice.

Documentation and institutional silence
Despite decades of extensive documentation exposing the Israeli State’s systematic use of torture, these grave violations have been persistently disregarded, fostering a culture of impunity that enables repeated and flagrant breaches of the Palestinian people’s fundamental human rights. Particularly alarming is the documented complicity and, in many cases, the active participation of Israeli health workers in acts of torture.22 -25 The Israeli Medical Association (IMA) has failed to investigate allegations of complicity among its members,49 50 while the WMA and many national medical associations have failed to act in a timely and decisive manner on growing evidence of torture and medical complicity, which now
spans several decades. In this context, it is important to note that medical associations (including the WMA), associated trade unions, and specialty bodies such as royal colleges, societies, and registration bodies all bear a responsibility to establish, promote, and enforce ethical codes of practice for their members.

We maintain that a failure to explicitly condemn violations in a timely manner, to clearly name perpetrators, and to demand accountability and remedial intervention, constitutes complicity. Medical institutions including the WMA, many national medical institutions, professional bodies, academic institutions, reputable
journals, and others have failed to forcefully condemn and act on clear patterns of violence. Their failure to sever ties with complicit institutions and join calls for international accountability and justice, raises urgent questions about double standards, the politicisation and selective application of medical ethics, and our wider professional values as a global healthcare workforce.51

The IMA must be pressed to acknowledge, independently investigate, and—most importantly—meaningfully challenge the systems of violence and oppression in which its members have actively participated or are otherwise complicit. As the IMA has
thus far repeatedly failed to act, global networks of medical institutions such as the WMA must immediately revoke the IMA’s status and sever ties with Israeli medical institutions, as was the case with the removal of the medical associations of the apartheid states of South Africa and Rhodesia in 1970.52 To this end, in a long
overdue move, members of the BMA voted at the June 2025 annual representative meeting to“suspend engagement with the IMA,” though with the caveat that this is only“until it affirms medical neutrality and condemns attacks on healthcare in Gaza.”53 54

The culture of impunity that has allowed flagrant, repeated breaches of rights to persist must be brought to an end. The thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli detention sites must be immediately released and provided with the reparative care they require. Among them are at least 95 Palestinian healthcare workers,35 the health and safety of whom remains under threat.55 56

There is no place for the misuse of medicine as an adjunct to state repression and violence. Such practices represent an abhorrent derogation of our professional values and responsibilities and are gross violations of our Palestinian colleagues’ basic right to life, health, and dignity. Torture not only destroys the lives of its victims but health worker participation and complicity in such acts corrodes the integrity of the health professions, and all those individuals and institutions that enable it. In the face of such violations, we have a moral and legal obligation, not only to speak out, but to act.
