It's fascinating that three of the most important developments in Indian science happened not in a laboratory or lecture hall, but in the most unlikely of places, on board a ship on an ocean voyage.
The first was in 1893, on a voyage from Yokohama to Vancouver, when Swami Vivekananda met Jamsetji Tata & inspired him to create an institute that merged the humanism of the east with the science and Technology of the west. That's how the Indian Institute of Science started.
In 1930, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar won a scholarship to study at Cambridge & while aboard the ship to England did the bulk of the work on the Chandrashekhar Limit for stars, for which he would later be awarded a Nobel Prize. This was, amazingly, before his 20th birthday.
And in 1921, 9 years earlier, CV Raman, returning home from Oxford on a sea voyage was dazzled by the deep blue of the Mediterranean and decided to study the scattering of Light. The 'Raman Effect' won him a Nobel Prize in 1930.
Raman was so confident of getting the Nobel Prize after missing out in 1928 and 1929 that he booked his ocean voyage tickets to Sweden months before he knew he had won.
137th birth anniversary of CV Raman today.

@RandomCricketP1 Thank you so much for such kind words! We've come a long way from where we started, it's been really heartwarming to see the RandomCricket community grow and thrive.
I am always on the look out for my namesakes and have found a few. I hope to live up to the name 😁

The 'Dr'🎓 in the name finally became official yesterday after 4 years at @IFICorpuscular and @UV_EG. Huge thanks to Juan @jherrero_86 for being an amazing supervisor, and to the fantastic tribunal: Arcadi, Laura, and Nicolás @carambolos

@IFICorpuscular @UV_EG @jherrero_86 @carambolos And to the incredible @NChitrangada for designing one hell of a PhD cover. What a stunning way to wrap up this journey! JVN was a brilliant physicist, teacher and mentor. One of the few Indian "public scientists", JVN had few peers when it comes to the spreading of scientific temper. He wrote several books of popular science and sci-fi, organized workshops and stood firmly against superstition and astrology.

Beautiful thread on how the weak force could be connected to the evolution and life on the Earth:

[Martin Bauer @martinmbauer]

The weak force is the only known force in the Universe that distinguishes between left and right. W bosons completely ignore right-handed particles, similar to how electromagnetism only affects charged particles.

But are there any macroscopic consequences of this property? 🧵

Cosmological bounds on the sum of neutrino masses keep getting stronger and stronger, and significantly in tension with the bounds on the same from the laboratory. We present a mechanism to reconcile the two in our latest work: https://t.co/mRObRcXDva

With great sadness, we mourn the passing of Prof Rohini Godbole. An exceptional scientist, mentor and leader, she won many accolades for her research and championed the cause of women in science.
Her vibrant presence will be greatly missed.

The 80th birthday cake for British theoretical physicist Peter Higgs, famous for the Higgs boson, was most extraordinary, featuring particle diagrams showing some of the modes by which his eponymous particle might be produced in collisions, along with the 'sombrero potential' associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking.
