On one end, the US is a soivereign nation and does what it wants. If it doesn’t want to support Ukraine defending itself from Russian invasion, it can do it.

Except this violates the treaty that made Ukraine give up its nuclear weapons in 1993.

Which means the US administration cannot be trusted to keep agreements made by previous administrations.

It is the reason Europe needs to re-arm. The assumption that the US administration will support allies no longer holds true.

It also means no rational country will give up nuclear weapons for US assurance in return: Ukraine is the example how this went 30 years later.
