Here’s my first notebook of the season from my time at Camden Yards yesterday.
Recap and analysis from yesterday’s game, including thoughts from Orioles manager Craig Albernaz, below:

Here are five players fantasy managers should consider scooping up off waivers following the first week of June.

I think the spirit of the rule is that players who are obviously going to be tagged out cannot pull a fast one by taking a wide route around the bases. The Orioles were not choosing to neglect Clement.
However, I think if Henderson made a better effort to tag, it gets called.
Umpire ruled Blue Jays' Ernie Clement did not run out of the base path here on this play. Had he been called out, it would've ended the inning.
It immediately came back to haunt the Orioles as Kazuma Okamoto drove him in with an RBI single.
It’s always hard see struggles in April, but baseball is a LONG season. Tread water and stick around as long as possible. Never know when you might go on a run!
Pitching is a weakness and that’s preventing the team from being on the Yankees’ level, but hopefully a playoff team🤞
Shane Baz's final line vs. Red Sox:
7 innings
4 hits
2 runs
2 walks
6 strikeouts
Five of his six strikeouts were on knuckle curveballs. He garnered nine swings and misses on 24 swings against his curveball — an impressive 38% whiff rate.
My latest piece for @JustBB_Media is a full breakdown of the Rays' starting rotation.
They are first in starter ERA but 16th in starter SIERA, meaning their rotation is likely to regress.
Full analysis on how all five rotation members project moving forward, below!
Is the Tampa Bay Rays' rotation legit, or is regression bound to come?

And no homers in a non-pitching game since 5/12.
This is frustrating for people who own him in fantasy leagues with daily roster moves. Just hit your homers on days you don’t pitch, dude!

Nats front office to Dylan Crews:
“Hey buddy, we know that you’ve had a tough start to your career, which is why we decided to start you in Triple-A. Now that you’re finally getting recalled, we think the best thing to get you on track is righty-righty ABs vs Nolan McLean.”
Watching the Orioles is torturous right now.
Their record isn’t terrible enough to throw in the towel. They’ve gotten some timely wins to stop skids.
Every time you get an ounce of hope, they get obliterated again. And getting crushed this often is a sign that they aren’t good.
This season I’ve been really wrestling with feeling cautiously optimistic and observationally pessimistic, as you can tell by how my tone often fluctuates.
I’ll give the O’s credit - they grinded and avenged that four-game sweep with a nice series win when the Yankees came to town. They’re still right in the middle of the mess that is the AL while many are declaring them dead.
Four free agent hitters earned nine-figure deals from new teams this past winter.

Alright - after a deeply disappointing showing this past week, I’m going to take an optimistic approach towards the coming days for the Orioles.
They’re five games under .500 with 78% of the season left. The roster isn’t desolate.
Show some heart and take this series in Miami.
