@migueldeicaza@MarkJCarney Speaking from closely following Canada - while Carney’s being timid, the country could have gone far, far worse; his opponent refuses to even go through the process of getting a security clearance, which is… SO suspicious.

Why so concerned about Carney in particular?
@jimstewartson I’ve also been an AI skeptic (despite working in the field). But - for coding - it’s been a real step change in the last three months. From “basically useless” to “very useful.”
The hype has been unreal, and there are many total charlatans, but I think there’s something there.
Important new piece from @jkbjournalist and @clurhealy. It's all--the predation and the coverup--as bad as you think. Lots of interesting details here.

More countries should ban social media for children and enforce it.
I made the mistake of optimising one of these social media sites with reinforcement learning (RL) for user retention several years ago. I realised later that I had made a mistake and I strongly regret it.
Humans are no match for super intelligent machines grabbing their attention.
While it is true that YouTube, TikTok, instagram, Snapchat, etc, can offer valuable information, such tools are optimised to keep users engaged. Slop, brain rot, anything RL can do to catch kids attention is what these companies promote. If you work at one of these, please don’t optimise with RL or LLMs to keep children hooked. You have a say at your org because the most important and valuable ingredient of any tech company is its workers.
I now visit X like I used to visit Breitbart: to see what today’s propaganda is. Oh, and to get my computer graphics chitchat. (Hey, the analogy’s not exact.)
