To get into an IIT, a top-tier student sacrifices the better part of his teens shuffling between classes, tests, and life-sucking Russian authors.

Once in IIT, they sacrifice quite literally the most fun four years of their lives with zero extracurriculars, managing to stay afloat between assignments and exams.

Then once they graduate and it’s time to reap the harvest, along comes a Silicon Valley heavyweight with an offer to erase generational economic inertia.

Please excuse him for giving patriotism a pass. He’s likely from a class that hasn’t sat in an airplane or gone on a vacation in ten years. Patriotism isn’t a substitute for his aspirations.

But yes, he isn’t every student in the IIT. There’s many others who don’t get placed, let alone in a FAANG, but those aren’t the ones you want. Because they would never say no to your offer.

As for the taxpayers subsidizing the IITs, we’re no outliers there. All countries do that without the entitlement.

There’s no obligation to donate one’s labor to the lowest bidder.

Not even moral.

Not even if subsidized.

And students aren’t exactly paying peanuts for what they get at this institution. Depending on the major, those 4 years can go up to 11 lakh in tuition alone. A bigger fortune is spent on just getting a foot in the door, in places like Kota.

That is, if the frustration and depression doesn’t kill you halfway through.

So excuse him for not placing “rashtra” above personal aspirations.

He’s earned that leeway.
