The Intermediate Field Epidemiology Training Programme (I-FETP) 1st Contact Session at @AIIMS_Rishikesh (13-17 July 2026) in collaboration with @NCDC India, New Delhi, successfully trained 19 medical officers and DSOs on:

1. Epidemiological fundamentals & disease investigation
2. Public health surveillance systems
3. Data visualization, interpretation & statistics
4. Outbreak investigation & response
5. Surveillance system evaluation (SSE)
6. Epidemiological study design & research methodology

Expert mentors from WHO and AIIMS Rishikesh guided the 19 medical officers and DSOs. NCDC Observer @Dr. Sushma facilitated coordination.

Led by Prof. Dr. Vartika Saxena and Dr. Ranjeeta Kumari, Nodal Officer, I-FETP.

On 15 July 2026, the Intermediate Field Epidemiology Training Programme (I-FETP) was formally launched across 14 premier medical and public health institutions in the country. The programme was inaugurated through an address by the Hon’ble Union Health Secretary, Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

AIIMS Gorakhpur has been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the programme for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, thereby contributing to the strengthening of field epidemiology capacity, disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, public health data analysis, and emergency preparedness at the district level.

India has remained polio-free since 2014, a testament to sustained immunisation efforts, robust disease surveillance, and the unwavering dedication of frontline healthcare workers. While this is a significant public health milestone, sustaining it requires continuous vigilance. As long as poliovirus exists anywhere in the world, the risk of importation remains.

The VPD (Vaccine-Preventable Disease) Surveillance Operational Guidelines further strengthen India’s surveillance framework by enabling timely detection, reporting, and rapid public health response to suspected cases of vaccine-preventable diseases.

By reinforcing surveillance alongside routine immunisation, India remains committed to protecting every child and sustaining its hard-earned polio-free status.

Strengthening India's disease surveillance ecosystem for a healthier and more resilient future.

Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava today launched the Intermediate Field Epidemiology Training Programme (I-FETP), an initiative through @NCDCMoHFW, to build a highly skilled field epidemiology workforce by training 250 State & District Surveillance Officers through 14 premier medical and public health institutions.

The programme will enhance capacities in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, public health data analysis and surveillance system evaluation, further strengthening India's public health emergency preparedness and response.

The Operational Guidelines for Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) Surveillance were also released to promote standardized surveillance practices across the country.
