I’m 50 years old, and I’m only just learning how to smile.
Not the closed-mouth polite kind I’ve mastered for decades… but a real smile. A teeth-baring, soul-offering, unapologetic smile!

It’s not that I haven’t known joy.
I’ve laughed, loved, and certainly lived…but never with my whole face.
Because behind every moment of happiness, there’s been a shadow:
a deep, lifelong loathing for my teeth.

I’ve hated them. Detested them. Yellowed, bucked, broken from years of illness and meds… they weren’t just a cosmetic flaw, they were the gatekeepers of my confidence.
And so I hid.

A full smile? Unthinkable.
“resting bitch face”?
Misunderstood my ENTIRE adult life.
I wasn’t cold…I was caged. Anxious. Afraid of the judgment that might follow if I dared to show my joy.

This last year has been brutal.
Thirteen teeth removed…
the aftermath of medications, infections, years of chronic illness taking its quiet toll.

But now, at long last… the work is done. The healing has begun.
And so….
I can smile.

And I will.

Not just because I can,
but because after all this time,
I finally believe I deserve to.
