WHEN I USED TO SAY THIS, the retort was that Charamba wants to corrupt and control journalism. The one thing you are taught in Journalism 101 is that it is a public service, indeed a public good! In many jurisdictions, the media get public funding in many ways: direct funding by the State - not Government! - or indirect funding through numerous tax concessions especially around inputs into their production processes. More sophisticated jurisdictions give “bottom-up”support, which is to say greater support is extended to smaller, struggling fringe publications to ensure plurality of voices. Nordic countries are examples. Here State support faces aspersions from the same media and readers who think funding from foreign governments channeled through pseudo-NGOs or institutions like USAID - when it lasted - is the shibboleth of free press/media in the sense of an institution insulated from the State. You would think they don’t know which State(s) is/are behind their (N)GO benefactors! It is an ignorant view of the political economy of the communication industry. Completely illiterate and duplicitous. When we created IMPI during the ministerial tenure of Professor Jonathan Moyo, it was as if we committed an abomination by getting journalists on it, in return for very modest stipends. The result was the seminal report - the only one in the history of this country - which gauged expectations of all stakeholders on media products. It is there, gathering dust! Closer home, there was this binary between so-called PRIVATE MEDIA and GOVERNMENT MEDIA, the nomenclature deliberately deployed to imply both quality and probity. That false dichotomy created a riven and polarised media environment. Meanwhile not once did any of the so-called private media turn down advertorials from the State, which amount to 60% of media proceeds in any jurisdiction worldwide. Note once, too, did we see any private media give away media products to the public for free, while restricting income to private sector business. You don’t need to be supremely educated to know that media product sales with the public necessarily make that business public, the same way taxes are!!! Even more recent, the Office of the President and Cabinet donated two cars to two newsmen - broadcasters - who have been working on the liberation struggle beat. There was a false uproar, again centred around giving a bad name to State support. Now I see that in the wake of dearth and death of Foreign Governmental Organisation (FOGO) masquerading as NGO, our media people - journalists, trade unionists, managers and proprietors - have now woken to what in the West is a truism: that journalism is a public good which can and should be publicly funded! Welcome to the real world, Comrades!!!
According to UNESCO,
"The Mwari religion which is still practiced in the area [Matobo Hill], and which may date back to the Iron Age, is the most powerful oracular tradition in southern Africa. The Matobo rocks are seen as the seat of god and of ancestral spirits."
IS THE CURE WORSE THAN THE DISEASE?
Sales of many co's I talk to have dropped since the the vendor clean up started...The economy is hurting.
Yes! Informal vending kills the formal sector & defiles our cities.
Formalisation is the goal. Must its pursuit be so painful?

You wanna know how @realDonaldTrump turned round Zimbabwe's economy?
Then read on.
Ever wondered why the stabilisation of inflation & currency markets in Zim coincided too perfectly with the dismantling of the corrupt USAID?
Then read on!
In February 2025, immediately following Trump & Elon Musk's USAID freeze, month-on-month consumer inflation in Zimbabwe for the local unit dropped sharply to a near-record low of 0.5%.
Month-on-month inflation for USD transactions simultaneously deflated to 0.2%
The parallel market premium actually began a steady, unheralded narrowing trend toward 20%.
When Musk & Trump issued that famous "Stop Work Order" on Jan 24 2025, they stopped the monthly Harare deliveries of actual pallets of USD cash on US military cargo transport planes👇.
Within 14 to 30 days of the freeze, the prominent, high-volume money-changing networks in Harare experienced a sudden shortage of "crisp," sequentially numbered USD banknotes.
It showed USAID & the Embassy in Harare were the single largest driving force behind Zimbabwe's spiraling, unstoppable currency and inflation pressures.
@StateDept's May 15 2025 Inspector General report flagged how @USEmbZim bypassed mandatory annual approvals from Washington since 2015 to issue hundreds of millions of US$ cash payments to a network of local "NGOs" and "contractors".
So, Zimbabwean authorities who previously found every single "common sense" solution they put in place not working, suddenly found their solutions "working" on the ground.
The only thing that had changed was that Trump/Musk had turned off the main Engine of Chester Croker's "Make Zimbabwe's Economy Scream" strategy.
Every Zimbabwean enjoying the country's new-found economic stability & growth has Trump to thank in large part.
Of course, when the Democrats come back into the White House & control of the Senate, the unauditable cash airlifts to Harare will resume.
After all, @JoeBiden and @HilaryClinton personally sponsored the ZIDERA sanctions law into existence in the US Senate, helped by @CoryBooker & @ChrisCoons, who were all prepared to see every single Zimbabwean die to achieve their corrupt ends.
Some of us are trying to guide Zimbabwean authorities to neutralise that scenario when it inevitably comes back.
But of course, they'll never listen.
Perhaps you now understand why I spent 6 years lobbying Trump to smash USAID to pieces, @mimmitwit@Mavhure@matigary.
