🔥 C3a/C5a → inflammation + chemotaxis
🎯 C3b → opsonization + more convertase
💥 C5b-9 → membrane attack complex → cell activation/lysis

❓Why complement, and why now?
🛡️ It protects us from infection.
🔥 But excessive or poorly regulated activation can injure glomerular endothelium, mesangium, podocytes & tubules.
💊 Unlike steroids, complement drugs target this cascade directly.

This was the first I came across BAC or breast arterial calcification being used as a marker of vascular calcification

This small crossover study, surprisingly showed that the BAC progression was actually higher with citrate dialysate as compared to non- citrate based dialysate, contrary to what we would expect !!
