🧵/ Beyond my OpEd, this has been highlighted by the general lack of enthusiasm for the new FDA pathway for custom gene editing therapies, which was released shortly after FDA’s reversal on a gene therapy for Huntington’s disease. It’s unsettling to those developing drugs, and highlights the risks involved in innovation.

At the same time, the government has demonstrated that it is possible to change the system quickly and effectively - with oral GLP1s from Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk receiving national priority vouchers for expedited regulatory review in exchange for increased affordability and domesticated manufacturing.

🧵/ I’ve been thinking a lot about innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. We need to take a closer look at the structures in place to fund and approve new drug treatments and evaluate how we are incentivizing innovation.

I recently wrote an OpEd in @RealClearHealth, "Biotech’s Innovation Paradox: Why the Excitement is Moving from Cures to Cosmetics." If we don’t change the system, we risk falling behind and losing sight of where innovation is needed most – saving lives.
