The Miracle of Imam Hussain’s (AS) Severed Head Reciting the Quran in the Bazaar
This is a well-known miraculous event in Shia historical and religious narrations related to the aftermath of the Battle of Karbala (10th Muharram, 61 AH).
What Happened:
After the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), his head was severed and placed on a spear (lance). The enemies (army of Yazid, under Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad) paraded the heads of the martyrs along with the captives — including Imam Hussain’s sister Hazrat Zainab (AS) and other women and children — from Karbala to Kufa (and later to Damascus).
In the busy bazaar (market) of Kufa — particularly the section of the money-changers where there was a lot of noise and commotion — the severed head of Imam Hussain (AS) performed a miracle:
• It first made a loud hawking/coughing sound (clearing its throat) to attract the attention of the crowd.
• Then it began reciting the Holy Quran, especially Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave), starting from the beginning.
• It recited verses such as:
• “Or do you think that the fellows of the Cave and the inscription were of Our amazing Signs?” (Quran 18:9)
• And continued to other verses, including warnings to the oppressors.
People were astonished. One narrator, Zayd ibn Arqam, said he heard it and exclaimed that this was an even greater miracle than the story of the People of the Cave.
