Charlie Brown reminds us that it's normal to sometimes feel emotional this time of year. Please take care of yourself and know it's OK to be a little melancholy instead of joyful. Follow the link for some tips from our own @DrSteveWengel

Last night it was standing room only for the winter concert of the Nebraska Medical Orchestra & Choir! What an incredible concert. Really amazing to see these folks, all of whom are involved in healthcare in some capacity, come together and perform for the community.
Wow! New research suggests the shingles vaccine may cut dementia risk by ~20% and might even slow progression for those already diagnosed.
If confirmed, a safe, widely-available shot could be one of our best tools yet in the fight against brain decline.
At night, your brain isn’t idle. It’s rinsing itself.
During non-REM deep sleep:
→ the brain’s glymphatic system becomes more active
→ flushes out waste proteins like amyloid and tau
→ the toxins that drive Alzheimer’s
Sleep = your brain’s nightly cleanse

Stopped by the Backyard Farmer garden after giving a wellness lecture for UNMC dental students. The garden is clearly ready for football season. Go Big Red!

@KeithSakata@EricTopol@Nature Thank you! As one of the psychiatrists you mentioned that sometimes prescribes low-dose lithium for my MCI patients, really good to see some of the more recent data on this.
Amazing concert last night of the Nebraska Medical Orchestra & Choir! We all got to sing a round with the choir, saw it he beauty of “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” being signed, and heard the virtuoso solo from MD/PhD student Jake Son!
Could feel the breeze on my face and the pavement below my feet. There were some great scents in the air from the flowering crabapples and lilacs.
Great time of year to spend some time in nature.
Those of us that give resilience talks often highlight mindfulness techniques. A pretty common one is the “5-4-3-2-1” technique where you try to observe five new things that you see, four things that you hear, three things that you feel, two things that you smell,
And one that you taste. I realized today when I was out on a walk that I could do that while enjoying the trail near my house. With a lot of flowering trees, seeing new things was pretty easy. And there were lots of unique bird songs to notice along the way. Then I noticed I
@DrMarleyDoyle@UNMCWellness Interesting! I wonder if people are just getting tired of the “wellness“ term, since it seems to pervade so many things in society these days.
@AaronGoodman33 Another major factor is the shortage of primary care physicians. An interesting study by Johns Hopkins a number of years ago showed a 50% reduction in heart failure readmissions when primary care doctors had more time with their clinic patients.
@drseanmullen I like Toro products and have been very happy with my self-propelled 60V Toro mulching mower. Toro also makes a battery-powered edger which uses the same battery which I also am happy with.
OK, NOW I’m in the holiday spirit after this rendition of Feliz Navidad by the Nebraska Medical Choir! They performed for the members of the Engage wellness program at UNMC.
