One of the challenges in teaching adult learners is making sure experiential activities connect directly to outcomes.
👉 How would you modify these dimensions for your own teaching context?

Last week I had the privilege of attending the new USCENTCOM Commander’s reception, as a veteran and an educator, I believe these pathways are critical to building the leaders our communities need today — and tomorrow.
Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of working with the Louisiana Secretary of Veterans Affairs to bring a similar initiative forward. This year, the legislation was signed into law — making Louisiana the 4th state in the nation to adopt Purple Star Collegiate legislation.
In 2023, Florida became the third state in the nation to pass the Purple Star Collegiate program into law—establishing a statewide commitment to recognizing and supporting military-connected students in higher education.
Narrative Inquiry = Story as Data
Data doesn’t just live in numbers—it lives in stories.
📖 Narrative inquiry explores how people make meaning through personal stories—and how those stories shape identity, belonging, and growth.
Improvement science isn’t just about tinkering—it’s about learning through doing.
It asks: “What change can we make that will result in improvement?” Then tests it, reflects, and adapts.
It’s inquiry + iteration + impact.
Designing Microcredentials with Purpose
A good microcredential isn’t just a badge—it’s a blueprint.
-Aligned with real-world needs
-Stackable and scaffolded
-Anchored in rigorous learning outcomes
Let’s build systems that honor learning, not just checking boxes.

What Fuels Adult Learners?
Spoiler: It’s not dorm life or dining halls.
Adult learners are driven by purpose, impact, and reinvention. If we want to serve them well, our institutions must move beyond retention rates and focus on relevance, flexibility, and belonging.
Microcredentials: Buzzword or Bridge?
Microcredentials aren’t just resume candy — they’re strategic stepping stones. When designed well, they validate skills, increase access, and align with workforce needs.
But let’s be clear: not all microcredentials are created equal. Quality, assessment, and transferability matter.

From crafting intelligence reports in hostile environments to drafting literature reviews in dimly lit libraries. Over time, I realized the skills — observation, analysis, strategy— weren’t just transferable. They were foundational to becoming a researcher, educator, and advocate
“When the Stage Becomes a Mirror: Presenting as Practice”
Recently, a doctoral student I mentor said:
“I didn’t know what my research meant until someone asked me why it mattered.”
📚 Publishing is more than academic output—it’s identity work.
I remember the first time I submitted a manuscript. I wasn’t just nervous—I was questioning whether my voice, rooted in military service, adult learning, and student advocacy, even belonged in the academy.
From Service to Scholarship: My Core Values in the Classroom
1️⃣ Purpose over Position
2️⃣ Transition is a Learning Process
3️⃣ Education is Civic Work
4️⃣ Research with Impact
I teach not to deliver content, but to cultivate reflection, resilience, and relevance.
Today was Military & Veterans Appreciation Day at the Florida Capitol. While I wasn’t able to attend in person, our office remains deeply grateful for the continued support from our state legislators. We especially recognize our student veterans who are preparing to make a lasting impact in Florida’s workforce—and the dedicated veteran faculty and administrators who lead and serve in higher education regardless how challenged it might be. #FLVeterans #StudentVeterans #HigherEd #MilitaryConnected
