Potemkin Party: the political theatrics is increasingly bordering on absurdity!
The same monotonous chorus; the same toxic and illicit quest for "sovereign" access to the sea packaged and re-packaged on every auspicious occasion. The hymn has to be recited - as a rule of thumb - by all senior PP officials, the Party Head, the top military brass, and even the nominal Head of State these days!
Celebration of Renaissance Dam or Commemoration of Adwa Victory... each and every public event invoked and misconstrued to "legitimize" what is utterly unlawful. Raw irredentist and expansionist ambitions, which are fraught with grave consequences to regional peace and security, whitewashed and "sanitized" as "imperatives for development" while in effect they constitute seeds of unnecessary turmoil and conflict.
Potemkin Party's illicit and delusional agenda is not what the Horn of Africa deserves or needs; this is indeed legal/international relations 101.
In October 2023, when he first unveiled his delusional rhetoric about #Ethiopia’s “sovereign right” to a seacoast, Abiy cautioned his parliamentarians not to talk about retaking #Assab, saying such discussions would only make reconciliation with #Eritrea impossible.
Fast forward to February 2026, and the same man now declaring 'Like it or not, we will not remain Land Locked' with a Navy Ship named 'Assab' — a statement that perfectly captures the ability to deceive, Lie and expansionst policies.
Abiy Ahmed is not acting like a prime minister; he behaves more like a narcissistic shock-jock influencer, making grandiose and implausible claims whenever he has a microphone and a stage. He appears desperate, unsettled, and increasingly incoherent. The only difference is - influencers do it for views and Abiy does it to distract the population from the realities in the country.
Ordinarily, the best way to deal with a narcissist is to ignore him. However, he is the leader of a country that is pulling itself—and potentially its neighbors—into a dangerous downward spiral.
He insists that #Ethiopia is stable, prosperous, and on the right path to development, yet much of the available evidence suggests otherwise. Many believe the country is in one of the most precarious periods in its modern history, arguably the most dangerous since Menelik II’s efforts to consolidate a nation-state. Ethiopia now stands at a critical juncture, and unless reasonable and constructive voices come together, the risk of further fragmentation remains.
Grave abuses and crises have become distressingly common: killings, burned villages, sexual violence, corruption, rising crime, hunger, and multiple conflicts across different regions. For many citizens, these are not abstractions but daily realities.
Yet in public appearances, he confidently declares that Ethiopia will become an economic model for Africa and even a military guarantor of continental security through newly trained elite forces.
He huffs and puffs, boasts about invading other countries and will get access to the sea by any means; and attempt to divert the public discourse to anything but the reality and lived experience of almost all Ethiopians.
“Delusional” hardly begins to capture the depth of the disconnect citizens see between rhetoric and reality.
Read my Lips "International law does not bend to the size of a nation’s population.
Whether #Ethiopia has 130 million or 1.3 billion people, it is still bound to respect and follow the same international rules.
#Eritrea alone holds the sovereign right to decide how its coast and ports are used.
No amount of bravado, threats, or doublespeak can alter that simple fact"
Come down! Stay put! Do not hasten your demise! ዓዲ ውዓሉ! #NoMoreAbiysWar
The level of ignorance, stupidity & mediocrity of #Ethiopia's OPDO-Prosperity ruling party functionaries is truly astounding. From the highest (i.e. @AbiyAhmedAli) to the lowest (such as this Dr Abayneh), they all suffer from severe case of Poverty of Common Sense.

▶️ Bill Gates & WHO were allegedly secretly sterilizing women in Africa, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr revealed.
💬 "Then they included human gonadotropic hormones in a tetanus vaccine program that they gave to a million women without telling them," he said.
European countries have designated Brigade NHamedu as a “domestic terrorist” organization and are actively hunting down its criminal members. Meanwhile, PM Abiy of #Ethiopia is harboring the group, opening offices for them, and providing military training and financial support. While the West cracks down on its activities within their borders, Ethiopia’s leader is openly nurturing and empowering the same terrorist organization, further destabilizing the region. #BirgadeNhamedu #BirgadeNhameduTerroristOrganization
Had a constructive meeting in Asmara with my Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh. We explored ways to boost cooperation in various areas of common interest including food security, marine resources, logistics, and exchanged views on regional and international developments 🇴🇲🇪🇷
President Isaias Afwerki has consistently emphasized that foreign aid cripples societies, creating dependency rather than fostering self-reliance. Eritrea has understood this since the days of the armed struggle for independence, when the EPLF built a self-sufficient system even under extreme conditions.
Eritrea remains the only African country to have outright rejected #USAID and similar Western aid programs, recognizing their role in fostering dependency, political interference, and economic stagnation. During the liberation war, the EPLF built underground hospitals, schools, and factories, proving that sustainable development comes from internal capacity, not foreign assistance. After independence, Eritrea pursued a bold, self-reliant development model without relying on loans from institutions like the IMF or World Bank.Eritrea stands as a living example that a nation can achieve significant development without foreign aid—a lesson more African countries are beginning to realize. #EritreaPrevails
The crux of #Ethiopia’s Prime Minister’s address to Parliament on access to the sea was this: the issue of sea access is “existential.” To make his case, he suggested that unless the matter is resolved through dialogue “now,” bad things will happen if the people of Ethiopia get desperate.
Only a distorted mind would believe that countries in the Horn of Africa would conspire to starve Ethiopians—people with whom they share not just geography, but blood, culture, and history. #Eritrea certainly would not. Even during tense relations in 2002, Eritrea offered its ports to deliver aid to over 14 million Ethiopians facing drought. It was the TPLF-led government that refused—because of its twisted logic: “Ethiopian people can starve, but Eritrea must not benefit.” They again rejected UN proposals to use Eritrean ports during the 2016 drought. I’ve argued in the past—and still believe—that Ethiopia’s core problem isn’t access to the sea. It is the chronic mismanagement of its economy and of its national question that is fueling ongoing conflict, pushing millions into poverty, and marginalizing the majority, while enriching a parasitic capitalist elite that shifts with each regime but continues to suck the country’s blood dry. A striking example: over 60% of the Ethiopian birr circulates in Addis Ababa—a city of just 5 million—while the rest of the country remains cut off from basic financial services, with no opportunity to save, invest, or grow.
Secondly, compared to many landlocked countries that must transport goods across long and difficult routes to reach a port—often with limited options—Ethiopia is actually well positioned. It borders five countries, each with access to the sea. To imagine a complete cutoff of Ethiopians from the sea, one would have to believe that all five neighbouring countries would simultaneously and deliberately impose a blockade—a willful paranoia, and not how geopolitics works.
That aside, last year #Djibouti offered Ethiopia “100% management” of a harbor at Tadjoura. And eight months on, it is still waiting for Ethiopia’s response. You can’t plead desperation, and then turn your back when the lifeline is thrown. [https://t.co/Nndq7iIg8b]
Lastly, the Prime Minister’s claim that he only wants to “talk” is disingenuous. He has already raised the matter with all regional leaders on several occasions. All have made it clear they welcome Ethiopia’s use of their ports under mutually beneficial commercial arrangements—in a manner reflective of the fraternal ties between the peoples and their desire to live and prosper together. But they have also been unequivocal: they will not cede any territory, nor will they become accomplices in his reckless bid to redraw the map of the Horn. Thus, to keep asking the same question after hearing clear, firm responses resembles provocation more than genuine dialogue.

‘Today, sabre-rattling and rising tensions surrounding the #RedSea pose a serious threat to regional stability. Now is the time for the international community to begin to rectify its long history of failure. Rather than issuing hollow and toothless statements or maintaining a false “both sides” narrative, the international community must firmly and unequivocally condemn those violating international law, fueling tensions, and threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of others.’ #Eritrea #Ethiopia #US #UN #AU #EU

Few thoughts on abstract/hypothetical scenario- analysis: a landlocked country may face an "existential threat" in the most extreme and unlikely case of an aggressive, simultaneous, prolonged, and coordinated naval blockade on it by all transit countries. In the event, misplaced sophistry and hyperbole is thus hollow in substance, dangerous in intent, and antithetical to healthy ties of bilateral and regional cooperaton that must be predicated on established norms and provisions of international law. https://t.co/0DSfF1teWp
Eritrea has never denied Ethiopia access to its ports, yet Ethiopian leaders have consistently acted out of hostility rather than national interest. As former Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi openly admitted (check clip below), “At the moment, using Eritrean ports will benefit them more, even though it will hurt us.” This means Ethiopia deliberately avoided Eritrean ports just to prevent Eritrea from benefiting, even at the cost of its own economy. This mentality is not new in Ethiopia. There is even a well-known proverb: "A man met an angel who offered to grant him a wish, but with a catch—his neighbor would receive double. Instead of choosing wealth or success, the man asked to have one of his eyes poked out, ensuring his neighbor lost both". This destructive mindset extends to Ethiopian politics, where leaders prefer economic self-harm over mutual benefit if it means Eritrea gains nothing.
In 2003, during a severe famine in Ethiopia, Eritrea offered Ethiopia access to its ports for humanitarian aid. Ethiopia’s then-Prime Minister rejected the offer, letting his people suffer rather than accept Eritrea’s help.
For decades, Eritrea has dealt with backstabbing leaders in Arat Kilo, and the current leadership under Abiy Ahmed is no different. Instead of prioritizing regional stability and prosperity, Ethiopian leaders continue their old games of sabotage and betrayal—hurting Ethiopia in the process.
@hawelti Eritrea’s commitment to regional stability and adherence to internationally recognized borders is commendable. Open dialogue and respect for sovereignty remain key to lasting peace and cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
