Technically, if the stock drops low enough, you can make very large percentage gains. Of course, it's rare. (Just like it's rare to by a stock at $0.10 and have it go to $200).

If you buy a stock at $1 and it goes to $100, you have made 100x profit.

If you sell a stock short at $100 and cover your short at $1, you have made 100x profit.

It's exactly the same thing. The process is just flipped.

Look at the guy who shorted LUNA at $25, and then covered his short at $0.00035

He made 75,000x his original short investment.
