David Miliband would be a huge asset to Burnham. Having been FCO Permanent Secretary when he was Foreign Secretary, I know David’s strategic clarity, drive and comms skills. He has global name recognition and a current top level network from his 13 years at @RESCUEorg. 1/2
Trump, Musk and Rubio slashed aid and scoffed that it was woke nonsense. Now they're seeing that it not only saved one life every 10 seconds but also protected us from diseases like Ebola. Their actions constituted a security failure as well as a moral one.
More broadly, their fecklessness contrasts with the courage and humanity of doctors and aid workers in Congo and Uganda, lacking adequate PPE but still risking the virus to care for fellow humans.
Trump, Musk and Rubio might learn something from them. https://t.co/kPKj7fqJFZ
And things are getting worse:
The effective tax rate of billionaires has fallen sharply after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2018.
In a context where billionaire wealth is booming, this deprives governments of very significant amounts of revenues.
If one takes a comprehensive view of taxation in the US, here’s the picture that emerges:
All social groups pay broadly the same effective tax rate today – around 25%-30% of income, all taxes included – with billionaires having the lowest tax rate: 24% on average in 2018–20.

We need to get ahead of this Ebola outbreak. The humanitarian community is fully mobilized – but the challenges are immense. Speed, funding, access and community trust will determine whether we contain this.
As evidenced by the unbridled promotion and implementation of technology at the expense of human dignity, we are truly experiencing an eclipse of the sense of what it means to be human. It is imperative to recover an understanding of the true meaning and grandeur of humanity as intended by God. It is in this sense that the challenge we currently face is not technological, but anthropological, and it is my hope that the Encyclical Letter to be published within a few days will contribute to answering this challenge.

President Trump's Iran war is pushing 45 million more people into hunger, particularly Africa, because of rising transport costs. It may turn out that the war will kill more children in Africa, through malnutrition, than in Iran. Thanks to @WFP for fighting to feed the hungry.
Delighted to meet with incoming @_AfricanUnion Chairperson @ymahmoudali and congratulate him on his election win over the weekend by African Heads of State.
Together the UK and the African Union will work together to boost mutual economic growth, create jobs and promote peace.
As the selection process begins, China ambassador says his country will be "happy to see" a female UN Secretary-General & supports the geographical rotation prerogative [Latin America/Caribbean region]
I was glad to join @USAmbUN in the launch of the “Trade Over Aid” initiative. At @DFCgov, we believe that nations must lead their own economic development, that mutually-beneficial private sector partnerships build durable, self-sustaining economies, and that exporting the American free-market system drives economic growth, strength, and goodwill worldwide.
It's true: Humanitarian aid isn't great at driving economic growth. What it excels at is saving lives. And what the Trump administration is good at is dismantling aid efforts that saved lives. A BU estimate is that more than half a million children have died so far as a result.
Can you take a country to court for destroying the climate?
In July 2025, the International Court of Justice effectively said YES YOU CAN!
For the first time, the world’s highest court confirmed that states have legal obligations on climate change, and that there can be consequences for failing to act.
On 20 May at 2PM EAT, join Power Shift Africa for the launch of our policy brief unpacking what this ruling means for African states, from climate obligations to fossil fuel accountability and the broader fight for climate justice.

A cruel swipe of a pen in a rich capital stacks the survival odds even further against the displaced Somali women I met today.
Cuts mean they have to go much further to get lifesaving food, medicine and water, with no guarantees they’ll find any.
Pleasure meeting the UK Sherpa for G20 & G7, Mr. Michael Ellam, and British High Commissioner to India @Lindy_Cameron. With the UK set to host G20 Presidency in 2027, we shared India's key lessons from 2023, both logistical and geopolitical; and how to ensure action-oriented outcomes. Delighted to see the agenda for inclusive global growth taken forward.
USAID employees represented some of the best of the US, advancing our interests and saving a life on average every six seconds. Now? Most were laid off, and this heartbreaking piece says half are still jobless. https://t.co/xZkj6Ttzmb
