Scotland 🏴
Research by Action to Protect Rural Scotland has claimed that if all 16 large data centres currently in planning went ahead, their energy use would be 1.5 times greater than peak winter demand for the whole of Scotland.
This is insane.
Our UCU Scotland president, vice president + officials had a first meeting since the election with Tertiary Education Minister Ben Macpherson. We left him in no doubt of the challenges facing staff and students in the current crisis in the university sector #SaveHE#StopTheCuts
Back on the picket lines at Glasgow Caledonian University today.
Staff, students, and the picket pups are standing together to save 100 jobs.
Cuts are a choice. Solidarity is too. ✊
GCU staff are on the picket line this morning. Fighting for jobs.
There is no deficit. GCU runs surpluses and holds cash reserves. These cuts are a choice.
The message to management is simple: rule out compulsory redundancies. This is a choice not a necessity,
Give this post some love or get yourself down to our members at Glasgow Caledonian. 🏴🏴🏴
Solid pickets and great turnout @GCU_UCU strike to defend 100 jobs and say no to compulsory redundancies. Hearing from branch president Karen Lorimer that university has no deficit and cuts are a choice not a necessity #StopTheCuts#SaveHE#SaveTheGCU100
Glasgow Caledonian University begin strike over job cuts. The University and College Union argues Glasgow Caledonian is not actually currently in deficit - the gap is projected - and that compulsory redundancies should be ruled out. https://t.co/NpWeScZg2e
With over 95% of those who voted electing to take strike action, our members are unequivocal in their message to GCU management- they do not accept the rationale for these cuts and will fight against any proposed redundancies.

@DrJoGrady and https://t.co/5jenjct2xW have written to Keir Starmer demanding emergency intervention as 15,000 jobs are lost across higher education and 2,700 staff face the axe at Nottingham alone.
When British Steel was at risk, the government nationalised it overnight. Where's that urgency now?
