The Kɔkɔsɛsɛ (or Sohori) is a fascinating royal object in Asante tradition.
It is held by the Ahenenananom — the royal grandchildren of the Asantehene.
Traditionally, its purpose was quite practical: to whisk away bugs and flies from the king, ensuring his comfort during public gatherings and ceremonies.
Over time, however, its role has evolved.
Today, the Kɔkɔsɛsɛ is used symbolically and functionally to maintain a respectful distance between the Asantehene and the public, preventing people from getting too close to the king during durbars and festivals.
