Wonderful time in the UAE strengthening our virtual exchange program with Khalifa University. We refined our youth well-being curriculum and kicked off a new collaborative research initiative for students. A tremendous learning experience.
I am pleased to share that I have been appointed as an Affiliate Professor in the Asian Studies Program at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).
As we continue to address global challenges in aging and health, understanding cross-cultural perspectives is more important than ever. I look forward to collaborating with the faculty and students in the Asian Studies Program to further our interdisciplinary research and education initiatives.

Just came across a wine called Longevity. As a social gerontologist, I feel professionally obligated to investigate. For research purposes only, of course. #Gerontology
Conference-unrelated…
Downtown Boston is such a wonderful place—walkable, safe, and clean, with plenty of public spaces for both locals and visitors. Every few years, I’m lucky enough to reconnect with long-time friends and revisit places that hold special memories.
Academic life can be unpredictable and challenging at times, but moments like these during conferences remind me of its unique rewards that keep us going.
The 2025 @geronsociety Annual Meeting is in the books!
Our Japanese and Japanese American Aging Studies Interest Group had a wonderful meeting filled with thoughtful discussion—and an equally delightful informal dinner afterward.
We were delighted to welcome Dr. Tina Kilaberia from the Silver School of Social Work at NYU to the UMBC campus today! Dr. Kilaberia delivered an engaging lecture titled “Structural Determinants of Social Isolation.”
Thank you, Dr. Kilaberia, for your informative presentation and engaging discussion with our faculty and students.
Our @Gero_UMB_UMBC faculty, Dr. Brandy Wallace and her colleagues, are leading a special issue on Menopause for the Journal of Women and Aging. Here is the link for the Call for Proposals.

One behalf of our @Gero_UMB_UMBC, I am posting this message. Please Help Support UMB-UMBC Gerontology Doctoral Students!
Funds given to this campaign will be used to support students’ conference travels and other research funding. Attendance at professional conferences is an essential part of the doctoral training. Due to recent funding cuts, the UMB-UMBC Gerontology Doctoral Program has very limited funds for student support this year.
In November, the largest gerontology conference, the 2025 Gerontological Society of America (GSA) meeting, takes place in Boston, Massachusetts. Your support will directly impact students’ ability to attend and their professional development.
Estimated cost of the 2025 GSA meeting attendance:
Abstract submission fee $30
GSA student membership $99
Student conference registration $215
Airfare/transportation (BWI – BOS) $250
Hotel/shared housing $200/night
Daily cost of meals $60
