TF-IDF weighting is powerful but confusing. I recently noticed a really simple way to think about it that I haven’t seen anywhere. I call it the 2.3 rule. The key is to think in ratios: a “1 in 10” word that occurs in 10% of docs has IDF log(10)=2.3.
