The Centre keeps allowing oil companies to earn ever-higher margins, while States—particularly those governed by non-BJP parties—are compelled to reduce their own VAT to cushion the burden on ordinary citizens.

If the objective is to provide relief to the people, why not reduce the Central taxes and duties instead of forcing States to sacrifice their revenues?

At the same time, the Punjab Government has repeatedly sought the release of more than ₹65,000 crore in what it says are its legitimate pending dues from the Union Government. If these are indeed lawfully payable, they should be released without further delay. Holding back funds that belong to a State only weakens cooperative federalism and ultimately hurts the people.

The common citizen deserves transparent fuel pricing, fiscal fairness, and a genuinely cooperative federal structure—not political one-upmanship at the cost of public welfare.
