Below is the "key" question Hedgeye's David Salem @dsaleminvestor posed to our Healthcare Policy analyst Emily Evans @HedgeyeEEvans during their new deep-dive discussion.
🔊
"If you said to me, David, you have 20 seconds to crystalize your whole thought process, the series of questions, the swirl of them, above all of this--healthcare spending in the United States more than any other organized society in the history of man, where is it all headed? What are the actionable opportunities for longer term investors?"
"Here's the question I would put to you...WHO SETS THE LIMITS? And by that I mean limits on prices, on volume, and what you experts in healthcare call the intensity of healthcare...who sets the limits? I think it's the key question."

Very proud of my much better half Amory for her remarkable performance in today’s California International Marathon, as documented in my Instagram feed (@dsalem1956👇). Although we’ve been married for 17+ years, she never ceases to amaze me. https://t.co/wTWdC1JqtS
It was a pleasure and privilege to compare notes with @tomkeene & @ptsweeney -- true pros and gentlemen with great senses of humor to boot. Fingers crossed I get the opportunity to re-engage with them in due course.
Borrowing a page from @KeithMcCullough’s book, as I’ve done profitably for years, I’ve procured a younger version of the likability hedge KM’s handsome 🦮provides. Expect research flowing from Capital Allocation @Hedgeye to grow edgier as a result. 😉

Thanks for the kind words @Tengdin. Thanks also to Rev. (and justly revered) @CliffordAsness for his "Amen" reply to my comment 👇, which included a key qualifier when voiced on-air with @tomkeene yesterday (10/1): "...transmute inherently illiquid assets into liquid ones ...".
"Wisdom" might be overstatement but I appreciate the compliment and truly enjoyed doing this pod with Ted: a true gentleman whose inquisitive mind and passion for investing I've long admired.
If you're looking for a Sunday afternoon activity, may I direct you to the wonderful conversations held by @dsaleminvestor and his esteemed guests within a series called 'CIO Corner' -- link below:

@HedgeyeRetail on #TheMacroShow@Hedgeye 8/15: "This chart shows you stocks' reaction to earnings vol is higher than it's ever been ... As Jeremy [@HedgeyeRetailJM] has noted, if you'd shown us press releases prior to earnings [announcements by many retailers] we couldn't have predicted what the stocks' reactions would've been. Companies can change guidance [minutely] and their share prices change hugely ... I don't think companies should guide, at least in retailing: they don't know where their numbers will be three weeks down the road, let alone three months. They simply don't know where consumers are going. Even the best of the best don't know." Wise and commendably candid words from one of the very best analysts I've encountered--in any sector--in 30+ years in finance.
Over the lamentably short horizons governing many institutional funds the societal challenges Raj discusses 👇aren't that important. Over the commendably long horizons governing the best-managed funds these same topics are all-important. My thanks to Raj for his time and service.
Your dad #DonaldSutherland's life was very well-lived, @RealKiefer, and included a conversation I'll never forget, the morning his son Angus graduated from @Middlebury College in 2005.
At a dinner the prior evening, your and Angus's dad fulfilled the College's request to say a few words as the pending recipient of an honorary degree by reciting in full T.S. Eliot's magnificent poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock--an arresting performance that was and remains the most memorable element of my 40+ years of engagement with my alma mater. Throughout his 10+ minute recital, your dad's gaze never wandered from Angus, who was sitting nearby.
As your dad and I were donning academic regalia for Commencement the following morning, I thanked him for his recitation of "Prufrock". "The most nervous I've ever been," your dad replied. "You're kidding," I responded, mindful of the many challenging roles your dad had played before live audiences in prestigious theatrical venues over the years.
Your dad smiled wryly, looked me in the eye and said, "But this was for my son."
Thank you and RIP Mr. Sutherland.
Run (don't walk) 🏃♂️ to this fabulous new conversation featuring American financier Ken Hersh. It's hosted by Hedgeye's David Salem @dsaleminvestor and is filled with powerful life lessons and investing insights acquired over a storied career.
Below is an excerpt/gem of insight. You can watch the whole thing here: https://t.co/M4jnSDh7Yv
FYI.. Ken is the author of "The Fastest Tortoise: Winning in Industries I Knew Nothing About―A Life Spent Figuring It Out." He is currently President and CEO of the George W. Bush Presidential Center.
He is the Co-Founder and former CEO of NGP Energy Capital Management, one of the largest natural resources private equity investment firms, managing over $20 billion of cumulative committed capital since 1988.
From 2012 until 2023, he was a Senior Advisor to the Carlyle Group’s natural resources division. In 2023, the Oil and Gas Investor magazine inducted Ken into its Hart Energy Hall of Fame as one of the top 50 “pioneering men and women who have shaped energy over the last half century.”
Always a pleasure to compare notes with Ted Oakley, on- or off-camera, on his home turf (TX) or elsewhere. Ted and his colleagues at Oxbow Advisors are class acts, striving ceaselessly to do the right things for Oxbow's clients, in the right way.
Rooms Where It Happened: Lessons from a Life in Government
Hedgeye's Director of Capital Allocation David Salem @dsaleminvestor welcomes special guest Bob Kyle for a conversation you won't want to miss.
Click here for access to the full webcast: https://t.co/vi4MRT8Yi7
Kyle has held senior staff positions in the U.S. Senate and White House, with joint appointments to the National Security Council and National Economic Council during his tenure as a senior aide to President Bill Clinton.
Tune in for veteran, high-level insight.
Along with some comparably astute and self-motivated analysts with whom I'm privileged to work @Hedgeye, Hal @NorthRockLP would be an early pick if I were tasked with forming a team of alpha generators under the age of 40 (or 80!). He's the real deal, worth a careful listen IMO.
The latest from my favorite writer. For the record, I'm not as enamored of chickens as Amory or Coach Harbaugh are. But I understand the appeal and certainly enjoy the eggs produced by the hens living in our backyard.
