Mike Conley on what basketball intelligence is to him.
(Really good long quote, on being a point guard)
“It’s an understanding of the game that’s a little bit deeper than just playing really fast… it’s a understanding of feel, like Donte has made 2 in a row, let’s get him his third shot or Ant hasn’t had a shot in 5 possessions let’s get Ant a shot or how can I get him an easy bucket or decision making, you got a 3 on 1 fast break and you got one guy whose cold and you need him to get hot and you got another guy who has made a couple, you go hey let me try and get an easy one for the guy who hasn’t made a shot… if you have a high IQ you can kind of see the play develop, you know what’s going to happen and you can start talking your way in and out of situations”
Hard coaching without relationship produces resentment. Relationship without hard coaching produces entitlement. The sweet spot is a player who knows you love them and knows you will not lower the bar for them.
Coaching isn’t comfortable. It’s carrying pressure so your players don’t have to. It’s absorbing criticism. It’s losing sleep over lineups, grades, attitudes, and futures.
Players get applause.
Coaches carry responsibility.
Every correction, every tough conversation, every standard held — it leaves marks. But those scars are proof you chose development over popularity.
Real coaching isn’t about control.
Want to win close games in March? Be boring.
- play off two feet in the paint
- throw on-target passes
- hit free throws
- take on balance, great shots
- finish around the rim
- secure rebounds with two hands
- don’t gamble on defense
Boring is cool. Boring wins.
For Indiana High School Basketball Players...
Priority #1 - Play in Charlie Hughes
Priority #2 - Play in Run 'N Slam
For all but, maybe, four AAU teams the non-live periods mean as much as the live periods b/c they don't have DI players.
Play events within 3-4 hours of home so that A) the schools that are going to recruit you can see you and B) the schools that see you are actually interested in recruiting you.
What circuit you play on is largely irrelevant for all but 20-25 players per class. For the other 100+ college level players you need to A) play in Charlie Hughes, B) play in Run 'N Slam, and C) actually interact with the schools that reach out to you in the spring/summer.
Our 7th Grade Boys have been on FIRE this year! First EVER 7th Grade HLC Football AND Basketball Champions! We’ve still got Marion County to go! In the meantime, let’s all cheer on our 8th grade Lady Hornets who are off to a 5-0 start! #web4me@TheHiveBGHS
This is for the coach who’s struggling right now.
We went 0–22 at Pacelli. Every night was heavy. Every doubt was loud.
A few years later—we won a State Championship.
Failure isn’t a death sentence. It’s a prerequisite.
Stay in it. You’re closer than you think.
Every high school basketball game starts the same: 0-0.
What happens next?
- The more disciplined team wins.
- The team that talks the most, rotates on defense, and values every possession wins.
