Designers, rethink your icon game 👁
The crisis isn’t the end.
It’s a rule change.
Button artists are out. Problem solvers are in.
The designers who adapt — learn data, learn AI, learn to talk business — will be fine.
Good luck out there 🤝
Sent 100 job applications. Got silence, 2 auto-rejections, and a test task that disappeared into a void.
If you’re a UX/UI designer job hunting right now — it’s not your portfolio. The market just broke.
🧵 Here’s what actually happened:
Can’t get into big tech directly?
Find large system integrators. They staff teams into corporations. It’s a backdoor into real product work and a resume line that actually opens doors.
Stop chasing sexy startup visuals.
Go ugly. Go fintech. Go industrial dashboards. Go internal tools.
Nobody wants a beautification specialist right now. They want someone who can untangle a mess of spreadsheets and turn it into something a human can use.
Survival checklist for 2026:
✅ Reframe your portfolio as problem-solving, not art
✅ Show research process + business outcomes
✅ List AI tools in your resume and show speed gains
✅ Learn basic HTML/CSS — literally doubles your market value
The market isn’t looking for people who draw pretty buttons.
It’s looking for people who can justify every decision in business language and prove impact with metrics.
Portfolio full of Dribbble-style screens? That’s the problem.
The hard truth about the outsource → product shift:
Outsource trains you to be a mind-reader. Fast context switching. Ship the mockup, move on.
Product wants you to be a data analyst who can also design. 6 months on one button’s conversion rate. Totally different job.
And no, seniors aren’t safe either.
Years of title inflation meant “senior” often = someone who got promoted for tenure, not skills.
Now product companies do real interviews. The outsource veteran hits mid-level walls. And their salary expectations are from 2021.
AI didn’t kill designers.
It killed one type of designer.
The ones whose entire value was: take rough sketch → make clean Figma file.
That work is gone. One strong designer + AI tools now covers what 3 juniors used to d
What’s left of gov contracts went to state-adjacent giants.
Small and mid studios got pushed out entirely. If they’re lucky, they get subcontracts — low pay, brutal penalties, no flexibility.
Government contracts looked like the lifeboat.
They weren’t.
Approving a shade of blue takes 6 months. Budgets are locked before the project starts. Then the money moved to defense infrastructure. Digital services got cut.
The outsource studio model is dead.
45.6% of IT companies opened in 2022 didn’t make it to 2025. IT bankruptcies jumped 25%+ in one year.
Studios that used to hire juniors, train them fast, and bill them at markup? Gone.
