My thoughts as No. 7 Iowa State dismantles No. 1 Houston, 69-41 to win the program's 5th Big 12 Tournament in 10 years.

I posted late in the second half that "I had no words." Two hours later, I still don't really have many words. Iowa State just beat the best team in the country by 28 points. They made one of the toughest college basketball teams I've ever seen give up at the under-12 timeout. The 26-5 run in the first 13 minutes of the second half was about the best basketball any team could've possibly played. It was impressive, so impressive. That's all I have to say.

You could talk about the so many different individual performances. Keshon Gilbert won Tournament MVP, deservedly so. Gilbert, yet again, looked like the player he was in early February. The junior guard scored 16 points (6-11 FG, 2-4 3PT) with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. ISU has matched his level of play all season. It's no coincidence that when he was struggling in late February, ISU had their worst offensive stretch of the season. When he was the best player of the floor, like tonight, ISU took the top team in the country to the woodshed. He's so vital to Iowa State's success. On the other hand, Tamin Lipsey is the floor raiser. ISU's identity is Tamin Lipsey. His stats tonight were 9 points (3-6 FG, 1-3 3PT) with 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. I voted him Tournament MVP, not just because of his stats, but because of his consistency on defense and controlling the pace. Add in the clear pride he plays for his hometown team and who came before him, he's so important.

You wanna talk about a ceiling raiser? It's Milan Momcilovic. The freshman seems to have his mojo back. He led the Cyclones in scoring with 18 points (6-11 FG, 4-8 3PT) and added 6 rebounds for good measure. The key moment in the game to me was early in the first half, he passed up an open three and it resulted in no points. T.J. Otzelberger said after the game that he pulled him right away and laid into him. That move must've gotten to Milan because he was lights out after that. The turnaround three he made in the corner was one of the most impressive shots I've seen this season. When he's on like that, he changes Iowa State from a Sweet 16 team to a Final 4 team.

I got this whole way without mentioning Iowa State's defense. Well, they held Houston to 41 points on 26.8% shooting from the field and 18.2% from three. Yes, Houston missed a lot of open shots, but the intensity and focus from ISU is what mainly caused their struggles. Big 12 Player of the Year Jamal Shead was held to 10 points on 3-17 shooting, L.J. Cryer was held scoreless in the second half and finished with 7 on 3-12 shooting. In the first 15 minutes, Houston had 10 of their 18 points come off of offensive rebounds. After that, ISU gave up just four second chance points. Kudos to Tre King, Robert Jones, Hason Ward and Demarion Watson for their effort down low. ISU now has the number adjusted defense on https://t.co/qQ2fksGpLD and the eye test backs that up.

What's this mean going forward? Nothing in March is a guarantee, but Iowa State enters the NCAA Tournament playing their best basketball of the season. That wasn't the case just one week ago. The ceiling for Iowa State is as high as ever, just use a 28-point win over Houston as an example. If ISU carries over the defensive intensity and unselfish offense, it could be a special March. #Cyclones
