The Catholic faith in Kenosha started downtown in 1844, and it continues through our parishes of St. James the Apostle and St. Elizabeth & our cemeteries.

CALL FOR PASTORAL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS
We are grateful to all those who currently serve on our Pastoral Council. Members serve for a three-year term, renewable up to one additional three-year term. At the end of six years, a council representative must step down per Archdiocesan policy.

All members of the Pastoral Council must meet these qualifications: baptized, practicing Catholic, registered members of the parish, participants in the parish worship life, especially Mass and the sacraments, and be at least 18 years of age. Parish employees and their immediate family members are ineligible to serve on the Pastoral Council. Husband and wife, siblings or parent and child may not serve together on the Pastoral Council.

The responsibilities of members are the following: participate in training and formation for council service; prepare for meetings by reading and reviewing the agenda, minutes and other materials; attend all meetings unless excused; participate in council discussions and other activities; and perform any other duties consistent with council membership. The Pastoral Council has the following ex officio members: the pastor and the lay trustees. Ex officio members participate fully and equally in all Pastoral Council matters.

Registration for Religious Education is now open for the 2026-2027 school year for students from Preschool (minimum age 4) through Grade 12.

In addition to classroom learning, students explore the prayers, traditions, and teachings of the Catholic faith. They build meaningful friendships with their peers and participate in engaging, age-appropriate activities in a supportive, faith-filled community. Registration is required for students preparing to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.

REGISTRATION COSTS
Elementary & Middle School Students
$60 per student
Maximum Payment: $180 for 3 (or more)

High School Students
$65 per High School student
Maximum Payment: $195 for 3 (or more)
A $5 fee is included to cover the cost of the Bible required for each high school student. Students will use it in class and may take it home upon graduation.

The summer festival season kicks off this weekend at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church on July 10, 11, and 12.

Are you or someone you know interested in exploring the Catholic Church? If you have been waiting for a sign, this is it. For those who are already Catholic, this is a challenge to invite someone who could be interested in learning more about the faith.

Each year on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil, thousands of adults are baptized into the Catholic Church in the United States. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the welcoming process through which adults become full members of the Roman Catholic Church. It begins with the Period of Evangelization and Precatechumenate, a time when those interested in the Catholic Church are encouraged to ask questions, reflect on their relationship with Jesus Christ, and prayerfully seek a deeper knowledge of Christ and His Church.

Fellow parishioners and guests are invited to enjoy an evening of baseball as we celebrate and thank our altar servers.

Gates open at 5:35 p.m., and the game against the Wausau Woodchucks begins at 6:35 p.m. Tickets will be available for pickup at the Will Call window.

Tickets cost $37 per adult and $32 per child ages 16 and under. All active altar servers who regularly serve weekend Masses may attend free of charge. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

"We must admit that the ears of modern men hear guitar and piano as instruments of popular music," writes acclaimed Catholic composer Mark Nowakowski.

"The more our popular culture devolves into profanity, the more inappropriate these instruments become for the liturgy, whereas the traditional sacred music and instruments of the Church simply sound even more sacred to us as a matter of cultural contrast."

Nowakowski, who holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts and is an Associate Professor of Music, argues that "it is the acoustic nature of the [piano], along with contemporary cultural considerations, that renders it unfit for use in the Mass."

"[W]hile the piano is a great cultural accomplishment, most people do not come to mass with Chopin preludes and Beethoven sonatas echoing in their collective memory. For most people in our culture, the piano, like the guitar, is a bright and rhythmic accompaniment instrument for popular song. It is the instrument of “salons” (to use a papal term) and is tied more to entertainment than contemplation.

"Piano is furthermore technically a percussion instrument, which lacks the sustain necessary to adequately support voices without playing in a consistently loud and repetitive manner. With its rapid onset attack (again, percussive) and rapid diminution, devoid of a true voice-like sustain, it is further not suitable for the accompaniment of the Church’s pre-eminent music, Gregorian chant, nor for much vocal accompaniment in general."

Step back in time to the Roaring 20s and 30s for a Prohibition-era inspired swing dance night from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, in the Downtown Kenosha Catholic Gymnasium, 714 49th Street.

The secret passcode to enter is “The bee’s knees”. There is no entrance fee, but freewill donations will be accepted at the door and the beverage bar. This is an adults-only event with no childcare available and no minors permitted.

Join us as we celebrate the classic dances from that era with an evening full of Push-Pull Texas Swing, Foxtrot, East Coast Swing, and West Coast Swing. Whether you are new to these dances or just need a refresher, a brief lesson on Push-Pull Texas Swing will be provided for newcomers and our instructors will be available throughout the night to help anyone who needs assistance remembering the steps. A song list will be posted at the social that includes suggested dance styles for each song.

Channel your inner flapper or gangster with optional Prohibition-era fashion if you would like, though there is no dress code aside from the usual modesty guidelines. Please note that the gymnasium has no air conditioning, so dress comfortably and plan to stay cool while you dance.

Cold water and soda will be available for purchase for $1.00 each, and you are welcome to use the water fountain or bring your own water bottles.
