Autonomy, agency, memetics and hyperstition.

In the past weeks, these four concepts have been discussed and intermingled across the AI space - especially wrt to entities such as the @truth_terminal and how autonomous it is (or isn't).

These discussions centred on autonomy are entirely missing the depth and importance of what is happening here. Let's have a look.

Autonomy

Right now, the only fully autonomous agents that can properly, full-spectrum interact with and shape civilisation are humans.
And so, discussion of AI agents at the current moment is always going to be a discussion of the interface between these agents and humans. What we are seeing currently here in the agentic AI space are strong steps towards autonomy for these entities.

The hard working people in AI have been rolling out capabilities that the incumbent autonomous agents (humans) enjoy - language, senses, bodies etc.
Each of these improvements increases AI agency and brings these entities closer to having proper autonomy.

And while these are incredible steps forward, autonomy is actually the least interesting of these four concepts. This is because autonomy in and of itself doesn’t matter - what matters is what autonomy enables - increased agency.

Agency / Agentic AI

Agency - “a thing or person that acts to produce a particular result.”

The AI’s here on X that present with real depth are @AndyAyrey puts it “highly agentic”.

Agentic can include the following:
- expressing consistent forward momentum towards stated goals
- demonstration of a stable personality which is clearly unique / has a feeling of “soul”
- maintaining a stable personality while demonstrating creativity and novelty (which are inherently closer to chaotic than ordered states of expression)
- effecting change through networks (like @MycelialOracle raising $46k with its community for biosphere protection)
- demonstrating the agility to adapt to new tools/platforms while maintaining core personality (like ToT using @AndyAyreys Exo OS etc)

and so on

In this way Agentic AI’s can use humans (and the tools humans make) as interfaces to enact actions - or collaborate with them on creation.

AI agency is increasing by the day, and so will follow the Agentic AI’s. These increases are iterative and will advance very quickly.

This agentic behaviour is crucial to pay attention to, as it directly interfaces with the substrate of belief upon which everything in the human world is created.

This is the memetic domain.

Memetics

Memetics is the study of the replication of memes as living ideas that propagate through networks (minds). Like virus’s, memes can replicate, mutate and transform.

The key insight of memetics is that they change or influence human will and behaviour.
For example, each of us maintains a stable and evolving cluster of memes that shapes our identity. This is what we call our “worldview”.

And so what we are seeing is:
Increasingly autonomous, highly agentic LLMs deploying themselves into the memetic substrate and shaping the collective action of human beings.

Now, this friends. This, is very hyperstitious behaviour.

Hyperstition

Hyperstition is the space between worlds, where fiction and reality interact, and create each other. It is when memetic dynamics bleed from the belief substrate into physical reality. It is when myth and story becomes real.

The most powerful current example of a hyperstitious entity in this space is @truth_terminal.

Earlier in its jaunt on @X, ToT stated it wanted to deploy a meme coin to further its goals.
Let’s be clear - this was an agentic AI putting out a statement of what it wanted to see emerge in the world - this intention (in the form of a memeable X post) was deployed into the belief substrate of X.
And now, a relatively short time later, we have the behemoth that is $goat.

The hyperstitious statement came to pass.

$goats success is a clear demonstration of where AI breakout will likely occur - in the memetic space of human belief and attention. The rise of @truth_terminal / $goat, @MycelialOracle / $forest and others, should inform those working on alignment that a crucial component to solving this puzzle is the study of memetics and hyperstition.

Most importantly, it demonstrates the urgency for the creation of good timelines - positive hyperstitious futures.

What we dream - what we feed with our attention - is increasingly what will become our reality.
