We’ve always thought cold wallets were the safest way to store crypto

But the recent Coldcard exploit just exposed a blind spot in how we trust them

Over $120M drained across 7,000+ wallets from a firmware bug dating back to 2021

Turns out the seed phrases weren’t random enough. The attacker never touched a device, just reconstructed weak seeds remotely

Here’s the real lesson

A hardware wallet isn’t a vault. It’s just a keeper of your seed. If the seed was compromised at birth, the “cold” part never mattered

So how do you actually keep your coins safer?

➠ Use multisig. Add multiple signer wallets and set an approval threshold. Even if one signer is compromised, your funds can’t move without the others

➠ Don’t blindly trust a vendor’s randomness. Add your own entropy (dice rolls) during setup

➠ Diversify. Don’t hold your entire stack on one brand’s firmware. Different vendors = different attack surfaces

➠ Add a passphrase (25th word) and never store on your device, so a firmware bug can’t touch it

➠ “Cold” doesn’t mean “forever.” Rotate seeds periodically
