Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya: The Palestinian Doctor Who Put His Patients’ Lives Before His Own and Was Arrested and Brutally Abused

▪️ On December 27, 2024, Israeli forces arrested Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, from inside the hospital before proceeding to destroy the facility and continue what have been described as war crimes.

▪️ During the months leading up to his arrest, Abu Safiya refused to leave the hospital or abandon his patients and the wounded despite repeated Israeli demands and threats. He continued his humanitarian missions working under bombardment, siege, and with almost no resources available.

▪️ Abu Safiya repeatedly appealed to the international community to keep Israeli forces away from hospitals and patients.

▪️ He remained committed to his duties as a physician despite being injured himself, despite injuries to his son Idris, and despite of killing of his son Ibrahim, whom he buried with his own hands inside the hospital.

▪️ After his son was killed by the Israeli army , Abu Safiya said through tears that they had “burned his heart.” Nevertheless, he remained steadfast and did not leave patients and the wounded alone in the face of guns and tanks.

▪️ Abu Safiya remains in detention and is reportedly being subjected to mistreatment and torture amid a deterioration in his health. He was recently transferred to solitary confinement in Israeli prison , with no communication allowed with him.
