@Renet29304 Not always. Momentum space is most useful when the physics is close to free, itenerant fermions. In particular, Fermi surface is really defined in momentum space. However, if it is about "localization" (due to disorder or strong interactions), then often real space is better.
The LANA (Lean ANAbelian geometry) project is now announced. For several years, the team has been quietly working on formalizing Mochizuki's claims on ABC. They'll have a followup announcement in July to declare whether the gap they've identified really is a definitive gap. (If I were a betting man, that's where I'd put my polymarket $$...)
@PKUWZP@miniapeur It's quite common in theoretical physics too. Yes the advisor provides the funding, which should be acknowledged in the work properly, but that does not mean that the advisor automatically gets his/her name on the paper without actually being seriously involved intellectually.
@haruki_wtnb The PhD stipend at Yale physics is now about $52,000. Similar figure at Princeton. One big factor of the stipend increase is the graduate student unionization.
The admin has paused student visa interviews as they consider adopting social media vetting. They’re finding ways to wreck the country that its critics hadn’t even imagined before. What a disaster.

Wow. The Trump administration’s proposed FY2026 budget calls for a 1/3 cut to HHS and a 40% cut to NIH - with an unprecedented reduction in funding from $47B to $27B and collapsing 27 institutes into 8. More below.
The CDC has literally been gutted today.
There’s no need for “April Fools” when reality is a nightmare for every human on this planet.
Thousand of scientists fired.
Entire departments erased.

A full decade of screaming about "cancel culture" and complaining about campus censorship and waving the banner of free speech only to implement and cheer this repressive system in American academia:
They kidnapped a Fulbright scholar off the streets of Somerville & absconded her to Louisiana with zero due process & no known criminal charges, very likely in response to bogus anti-semitism allegations stemming from an op-ed she wrote critical of atrocities by Israeli state.
@littmath The second is clearly Chihiro from spirited away. The first looks somewhat similar, but I can not really tell whether this is an actual Ghibli movie character.
