In January 2023, I decided it was time to speak out against the insanity taking over academia. On January 23rd, I took to Twitter to announce that I would be resigning from my position at the University of Alabama at the end of the spring semester. The reason? The university, like so many others, had become obsessed with DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives and climate alarmism, to the point where these ideologies were choking the life out of academic freedom.

For years, I watched as the university shifted its focus from merit-based education to ticking DEI boxes. It’s a system that prioritizes virtue signaling over real academic achievement, a system where every decision—from student admissions to research funding—is filtered through the DEI lens. This isn’t just misguided; it’s dangerous. It alienates students, undermines the quality of education, and punishes anyone who dares to question the prevailing narrative.

But the final straw was the climate alarmism that’s been allowed to run rampant. The constant drumbeat of a "climate emergency" is not only scientifically dubious, but it’s also having a profoundly negative effect on young people. I’ve had students come to me, saying they’re so convinced the world is ending that they’ve given up on the idea of having families or planning for the future. This kind of catastrophizing doesn’t motivate people to be good stewards of the planet—it paralyzes them with fear.

So, I spoke up, knowing full well that it was career suicide. Sure enough, some of my colleagues took to social media to call me a racist. But someone had to say it: DEI and climate alarmism are destroying academia. Universities should be bastions of free thought, not echo chambers for the latest ideological fads. It’s a fight worth having, even if it means stepping away from a profession I once loved. My hope is that by making this stand, others won’t have to suffer in silence, and maybe, just maybe, we can bring sanity back to our universities.
