Can an Unbeliever Act in a Gospel Movie?

There has been much debate about whether an unbeliever can take part in a gospel movie, with many citing The Passion of the Christ as a reference. Let’s break this down clearly.

What Is a Gospel Movie?
A gospel movie is one where the primary purpose is evangelism, with entertainment being secondary as a tool for the primary. This is why we use the term “evangetainment.” The main goal is to win souls for Christ, while secular movies primarily focus on generating revenue from viewership.

To better understand the issue, let’s categorize those involved in movie production into two groups:

Those behind the camera (e.g., cinematographers, sound engineers, gaffers, script managers, production managers, etc.).
Those in front of the camera (actors, speakers, and on-screen representatives of the message).

Using the church as a metaphor, those behind the camera are like the bricklayers, welders, and painters who build a church building. Whether they are believers or not does not affect the final outcome as long as the structure serves its purpose. In the same way, hiring professional crew members for production—regardless of their faith—does not directly impact the message being delivered.

However, the same cannot be said for those on camera. The moment an actor steps in front of the camera in a gospel movie, they become a representative of the message. Their role is similar to a preacher standing on the pulpit—they are speaking to souls about the gospel. An unbeliever stepping into that role would be like someone who openly denies Christ one day and then stands to proclaim Him the next. The inconsistency is glaring.

Yes, some individuals live double lives—appearing holy on stage while living in sin privately—but even this deception proves there is an expected standard. Pretending to be righteous only highlights that doing otherwise is an anomaly.

Are There Exceptions?
Absolutely. God can use exceptions to accomplish His purposes in unique situations. However, exceptions do not replace the standard. Eg.

-Hosea marrying a harlot (Hosea 1:2-3)
-Isaiah told to walk naked for three years (Isaiah 20)
-The instant death of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5)
-A donkey speaking to Balaam etc

These instances were exceptions, not the standard. Likewise, The Passion of the Christ was a powerful film that God used to spark a revival, but it was an exception, not a standard.

It’s important to note that The Passion of the Christ did not feature A-list Hollywood actors. This was a deliberate choice by the director to ensure that the focus remained on the message rather than the actors. Seeking out “unbelieving professionals” solely for their talent or celebrity status is already a misplaced motive.

In Exodus, God anointed specific craftsmen to build the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:1-6). This was a sacred, highly visible role, and those chosen were filled with the Spirit of God for the task. Similarly, there are actors whom God has specifically anointed to use their gift for His glory in gospel films.

Final Thoughts
Using actors who are not grounded in the Word of God poses significant spiritual risks—something I will address in a separate write-up. However, the key takeaway here is this:

Being on camera in a gospel movie is not merely a performance; it is a ministry. Just as an unbeliever cannot stand on a pulpit to preach, they should not take on roles meant to communicate the gospel in a film. God has already anointed individuals for this work—our responsibility is to find and equip them, rather than compromise the message for the sake of professionalism or fame.

That said, we must emphasize that we do not hate unbelievers. They are loved by God, and we are called to reach out to them with the message of salvation. However, not all platforms are meant for everyone. Just as a medical professional is required to have the necessary qualifications to practice medicine, certain roles within the kingdom require spiritual alignment. Our desire is not to exclude but to uphold the integrity of the gospel message.

The church, pastors, and RCCG have all received an unbearable amount of targeted smear, slander, and backlash non stop for weeks now because many now conclude they are the nation’s problem.

There’s something called the Scapegoating Theory and it explains a lot.

Developed by sociologist Emile Durkheim, it essentially states that a group who feels illegitimately treated or oppressed or threatened would blame another out-group for their woes.

Most times, the target of the unfair blame would usually be lesser to them in terms of power.

This helps them to displace their frustrations against the real enemy whom they perceive they’re powerless against, on the scapegoat.

This shares close similarities with Sigmund Freud’s concept of displacement.

Displacement is why a man angry at his boss would yell at his wife for the slightest infraction.

He can’t touch his boss but he can dominate his wife.

It’s scapegoating and displacement.

It’s why Nazi Germany scapegoated the Jews for the perceived problems of Germany.

It’s why women were falsely killed as witches in the Middle Ages.

And it’s why a number of influencers on Twitter here and many Nigerians have not ceased attacking Christians, churches, pastors, and RCCG for the problems of the nation all week.

At a point this week, it became totally baffling to the logical mind.

Why are you attacking the church non stop for the woes of the nation?

If you made a list of the problems of Nigeria right now, pastor’s teaching on tithes, whether false or sound, would not make top 70.

If RCCG ceased to be an organization today and totally disappears from the earth, insecurity, corruption, inflation, low GDP etc;

which are Nigeria’s real problems would still be very much present.

Baba Adeboye is an old man. If the Lord calls him home today, guess what would happen tomorrow?

The current government would still spend 5 billion Naira on cars, close to 50 billion Naira for housing renovations, 90 billion Naira for Hajj pilgrimage, and 3 trillion Naira for fuel importation for 42 days.

If Baba Adeboye joins the Lord today and is buried, excessive borrowing, insecurity, lack of power and energy, and gross corruption would still ravage Nigeria.

The summary is that the church, pastors and their doctrine, RCCG are not causatively, correlatively, or remotely the problem of Nigeria.

It doesn’t matter what any church leader says or believes or who they support.

It is largely inconsequential to the problems of Nigeria.

So why the constant attack? It is the Scapegoating Theory and Displacement.

You’re looking at a group who believes the government, real enemy, has defeated them.

Protests seem not to work.
Petitions seem not to work.
2027 seems hopeless for them.

So they pick an opponent they can shred as an outlet for their frustration.

It is rather sad as such resolve only absolves our oppressors of consequences.

It is also a massive distraction and waste of social energy. The government wins this way.

And we all lose this way. Finally, we just thought to give an explanation to the events you as a Christian have observed lately.

We want you to filter out the noise. Do your best to stay afloat in these challenging times.

Criticize the government as constitutionally permissible. They are the oppressors.

Get your PVC. 2027 is a fight we can win.

As far as today is concerned, Peter Obi remains the choice candidate for the transformation of this nation.

We all backed him 2023, we still do. That said, ignore the noise about the church and pastors.

Those are the palpitations of cowards and the defeated.

The church marches on in Jesus name. Amen.

Former President Obasanjo is a man with a tremendous capacity for mischief and Nigerians know it. His journey along the path of hallucinations has never been in doubt. So is his descent into muddling facts, forgetting that he ran a Presidency on record as the most corrupt. His recent diatribe at Yale University lacks sincerity.

It is actually laughable that Obasanjo's pretentiousness about fighting corruption is not cutting any ice in the eyes of the general public. We all know what happened under his watch and how, up till the present moment, there has been no explanation as to how he wasted a whopping $16bn in generating megawatts of darkness across the nation. But that is not even the issue.

Democracy suffered mortal wounds under his watch only capped by his murderous rage for an ill-fated 3rd term. Successive administrations struggled to clean up the mess Obasanjo left behind, which President Tinubu is now making progress with. Obasanjo has lost any moral right to condemn any government. He should apologise to Nigerians for not laying the foundational infrastructure Nigeria needed to advance.

The. Yoruba proverb, “A o ki n wo ariwo oja, eniti a anba na oja ni a n wo”. This means that you shouldn’t pay heed to the market's noise. Rather, keep an eye on the person you are negotiating with. This is instructive. In this market called Nigeria, the man with the renewed hope agenda is the one that matters and indeed Nigerians. Everything else is ariwo oja. This administration will stay focused in bringing relief to Nigerians. Obasanjo's remarks reflect the infantilist nature of market noise.
President Tinubu will Stay the Course in seeing through the reforms he has instituted for a better Nigeria.

The point here is that Obasanjo should take time off this habit of pulling down leaders, especially his successors and try to interrogate himself on how he has contributed to the parlous state of the Nigerian nation which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now spiritedly battling to put back on the track of development. We thank former President Obasanjo for agreeing that "Yes, there is hope". That's the Renewed Hope Agenda President Tinubu is about and it's on track. We are happy to have that conversation with the former President.
