@KySportsRadio Yonder is a derivation of “yon” and waller is a mispronunciation of “wallow”. These along with the a- prefix before a verb are all holdovers from Victorian English that the Scots-Irish brought with them when they crossed the Atlantic.
Well… here goes nothing.
A letter from a die hard member of the BBN, turned media member because it was his dream.
I was too young to watch Rupp’s runts, I never saw Joe B. Hall with his rolled up program. I didn’t watch Rick Pitino win in ‘96 and I can’t say he should have played Derrick Anderson in ‘97. And lastly, I was a measly one year in age when Tubby Smith led the comeback Cats to cut the nets in ‘98.
I thought Patrick Sparks and Tayshaun Prince were as good as it got for the Cats. I loved every minute of it and had a jersey for both of them. There was nothing like going to one game a year with my dad as a birthday present and eating in that food court down the escalator at Rupp Arena.
After two miserable years of a man “Billy”, here came a sharp dressed man from Memphis named John Calipari and suddenly Kentucky was cool again. With him he brought John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, many celebrities, all the big boosters, tons of fun players, and a lot of winning. To follow over the next ten seasons, we had three first overall picks, 7 elite eights, 4 final fours, an undefeated regular season, two title appearances, and of course 2012 when the Cats brought home the National Championship to it’s rightful home in Lexington.
The highs were so high and provided some of the most fun memories of my childhood and young adulthood. That led to me paving a way into to a part-time media member because the access seemed like a dream. That then led to the kid who struggled to read and write strive to get better so he could write about the Cats. I bought a camera to capture moments of my favorite childhood team.
Since joining media part-time, all while owning a business and helping pastor a church, I have witnessed a lot. A canceled tournament, a missed tournament, a loss to a 15 seed, a second round loss, and a loss to a 14 seed. Ultimately, a combined 2-7 in post season play if you include SEC and NCAA.
Overall, I still say I wouldn’t trade this opportunity for anything. It has been a dream come true to have that level of access and experience all that I have over the years.
So, from the kid who geeked out meeting John Wall at Kentucky Camp, his mom going crazy about meeting Tony Delk, and his family that skipped school to watch Brandon Knight get on a bus. We waited hours at a fence to watch “the brow” and his team get off a plane and hold that coveted title trophy. Our whole friend group that ran around my parents yard going nuts when Aaron hit “the shots”. And finally, the one who laid in the floor and cried in 2015 because he bought title tickets at beginning of the season…. I’m afraid it’s time for change at the top and I hate to even type those words.
There is a disconnect between the head coach and the administration, the boosters, the media and now the fans… “Next year” can’t be uttered anymore…
It’s took me a long time to come around to this because of the memories but here I am…
If it isn’t the end because of a 33 million dollar buyout, then I’ll still be there almost every game and will pull for the Cats every day… but separation seems inevitable.
So, let’s say thanks for the memories Cal, they were great and you should have your jersey in the rafters with Rupp, Hall, Pitino, and Smith!
The Pittsburgh natives road with the Cats may have ended there, but there were a lot times I will never forget. Thank you John Vincent Calipari for everything but it’s time 💙
I thought about putting this strictly on A Sea of Blue. But, I wanted my friends and family, who know my love for the Wildcats, to enjoy this letter.
Thanks for following along and as always head over to https://t.co/tRTVH2TGAr for all your Cats coverage. 😼
What's the worst that can happen if we fire cal.
