Human-Made Mass v Biomass

In the past 5 years, the Human-Made Mass on Earth has eclipsed the Biomass of life on Earth.

This is quite a stunning statistic, and the chart below is even more stunning because it illustrates the scale and robustness of this trend.

Human civilisation is gradually transforming much of our environment, in particular our use of concrete to sculpt and shape the environment to our economic needs.

The Earth will host over 1 trillion tonnes of concrete by the end of the decade and this figure is doubling every 20 years or so.

Counter to popular belief, the biomass of Earth is also rising. It reached a nadir in 1965 but biomass is now in a state of rebound as increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere accelerate photosynthesis and the carbon cycle.

Green plants are growing faster than ever as organic carbon that was trapped in Triassic and Jurassic geological formations is rapidly recovered to the surface and released into the atmosphere as part of our energy industry.

The future Earth is going to have a lot more concrete and a little more leaf cover.

The long term impact of these trends should not be overlooked. Both are good. The planets landmass should be both greyer and greener.

Having said that, the construction curve is an asymptote because all the best sites are already taken and we are developing increasingly less favourable sites. The marginal construction site naturally weakens and diminishes as we continue to expand our development horizon.

But for now, the world has been building faster, even though in some countries it feels stagnant (some countries are stagnant), collectively humanity is booming.

This is how we address poverty. We build.

By 2060, humanity should have 5 trillion tonnes of stuff and it’s not going to stop there.

We have at least 450 years of 3% GDP growth until the planet is so hot it’s a self luminous orb (like the sun).

It’s good to have some planetary context of your moment in time, it makes it much easier to understand the future relative to the past, and relative to today.

Do you really think the research effort going into alignment isn't one of the main causes?

I struggle to imagine the state we'd be in if none of the techniques we've learned to grow aligned minds were getting applied.

Sure we're going to ride the benefits of emergent alignment where we can but emergent misalignment is definitely actively getting nipped in the bud.
