@ZannyToy @Sorb3tStan And regarding "paid off" it's not a "no debt" situation. Debt refers to anything that takes money away from you. Have a burger at your favourite restaurant? That's debt too. Credit checks are specifically for your ability to pay back longer term commitments reliably.

It is to assess your reliability in paying back the loan you take out. It often requires months or years of paying on-time

Banks require you to have some sort of debt (credit card, store accounts etc) to have proof you won't default on any loans you take out with them. These reflect on your bank account and show viability.
