This is what running around Golden Gate Park at 99 looks like. San Francisco, 1966.
Every morning, rain or shine, 99-year-old Larry Lewis would run six miles through Golden Gate Park while the city slept. His advice was simple but profound: "When you make a friend, hold them close." He was grateful he had.
In San Francisco, he worked as a waiter at the St. Francis Hotel and celebrated his 102nd birthday by running 100 yards in 17.3 seconds, half a second faster than on his 101st birthday. The extra speed, Lewis explained, was due to his sneakers. He said he wore street shoes for the 101st birthday run.
Larry was raised on a Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona and left at 15 to join the P.T. Barnum Circus as an acrobat and aerialist. He claimed that for thirty-three years he worked as Harry Houdini's assistant.
He died on February 1, 1974, at the age of 106.
