The frankly totalitarian system set up by #DMUVC made a lot of people I know deeply unhappy, crashing careers and damaging mental health. For that reason I am not sad to see him and those around him gone. The lecturers and students at DMU were, by contrast, generally wonderful.
@mikeysmith@ForgePress Heard quite a bit of stuff from DS' time in Sheffield which never made the papers. Had he stayed and you'd pulled at that thread there'd be a lot more...
This story about Leicester De Montfort’s Vice Chancellor stepping down mysteriously rang a bell - I knew I recognised Dominic Shellard’s name from somewhere.
Here’s a story I wrote for @ForgePress in 2011...
Many members of staff stating that senior management have been instructing security personnel on campus to remove @UCU_DMU posters which compare the #DMUVC and staff salary.
I have been told - more have been, and will continue, to be put up.
This is an uncomfortable but fair question. Yes they person concerned is an expert in their own right (as with Sonya Shellard) but there are questions to be asked about how they got the role and whether it's value for money for DMU #DMUVC
@dmuvc The Ex VCs husband is listed on LinkedIn as having been in post since April 2018? Course starts sep 2019 or jan 2020. Quite a run in. Was this post advertised? Selection process etc?!
Absolutely agree with this. The more formal complaints through the Unions the better. Also hope @UCU_DMU's request for an inquiry comes to pass. Hopefully official but if not maybe be organised independently, to which people could report to anonymously. #DMUVC
In the wake of the news about the #DMUVC if people continue to have concerns about bullying, threats or intimidation to talk to the teams at @demontfortsu for students or to @UCU_DMU or @unisontweets for staff.
Also check University policy details online.
Undoubtedly the @dmupvc is a very busy and important man. Thankfully he has a great support team that until recently included a deputy, a deputy for his deputy, a PA, EA, assistant to his EA, office manager, executive officer, chief of staff and head of PVC office position!
I should add that, on a day to day level, I found DMU HR understaffed and largely disfunctional. I continued to receive my salary for two months after leaving the University. #DMUVC
It has also been decided:
1. To issue a call for colleagues to help with a commission/worker’s inquiry for evidence into the culture at DMU during Dominic Shellard’s tenure;
2. To issue a call for colleagues to help draft a Programme of action to enact the DMU Renewed manifesto
This meeting has no confidence in the current management and governing body as they stand, to change that culture.
We want to see a complete change of culture to enable honesty and accountability and the full implementation of UCU’s DMU Renewed manifesto.” (2/2)
“This meeting believes the management culture of @dmuleicester under Dominic Shellard’s leadership has been one of extravagance, lies, bullying and lack of accountability at the top. (1/2)
No one has actively came out to students or staff, and apologised for the situation we now find ourselves in. An apology is not an admission of guilt; it is acceptance that more could, and should have been done to prevent it.
Universities have lost the plot. Vice chancellor of Leicester’s De Montfort University, forced to resign on Monday, had been awarded 22.4% basic salary increase for 2017-18. https://t.co/mJzp0MmBz2
Do hope we might see a comment from Oliver Mishcon https://t.co/YxmIzlEtCv or Tony Payne of @SPERIshefuni on why they resigned soon. Keep asking! Likewise worth trying to speak to those ex Governors and staff who aren't gagged #dmuvc
