Markets take the shape of their container, and until recently, social norms and material hardship shaped who we chose and why.
We "solved" those, so what's left shaping the mating market is status games and algorithms. Not sure we can have our cake (viz. freedom from raw competition) and eat it too (viz. freedom from social or environmental constraints).
@feelsdesperate Acquiring power requires competence, but holding it requires loyalty. Over time all institutions shift from rewarding the former to rewarding the latter.

@majamediaco One could argue that performing “for others” is braver because it risks judgement.
Doing something “just for ourselves” is usually still a performance… in which we’re the only (famously forgiving) audience!
