We are talking about putting an important nutrient into commonly consumed foods so that protection doesn’t depend entirely on someone remembering a pill, accessing healthcare, or even knowing she is pregnant.
This is NOT an argument against supplements.
WAIT. Before you throw that seasoning cube into your pot…
There’s a vitamin we NEED to talk about.
And no, this isn’t another “seasoning cubes are bad for you” lecture. 😂
This one is about Vitamin B12 and why it belongs in Nigeria’s hidden hunger conversation.
Let’s talk
This is why “Just eat a balanced diet” can sometimes sound easier than it actually is.
Because nutrition isn’t only about knowledge.
It is also about access.
You can have a full plate.
And still not be getting enough of certain essential micronutrients.
Because public health should not only ask:
“How do we get more women to take folic acid?”
We should also be asking:
“How do we make sure more women get enough folate in the first place?”
This is why food fortification deserves a much bigger conversation in Nigeria.
Another day we will talk about the Chinese people in several mineral rich states doing “backyard mining” with backing of the government.
That day is coming
So what if prevention could reach people before they knew they needed it?
That is where food fortification comes in.
Evidence shows that folic acid fortification can reduce neural tube defects by up to 70%.
Think about that.
It's been a while since I had this in my drafts.
Hacks on how to win fully funded scholarships, including fields & regions.
In the last 5 years, I have totalled over 200K euros in scholarships/ research funding without a kobo leaving my account - I may actually know my stuff.
Before today, had you heard the term “hidden hunger”?
Do you know You can be well-fed and still be malnourished?
Not all malnutrition looks like a starving child.
Some forms of malnutrition don’t make you look sick. They quietly make you less healthy.
You can eat three meals a day and still be malnourished.
That’s the scary thing about hidden hunger.
Hidden hunger is micronutrient deficiency; not necessarily a lack of food, but a lack of the vitamins and minerals the body needs to function properly.
So, what do you think Nigeria should be doing differently to tackle micronutrient deficiencies?
