Thank you @RepSuhas for speaking up on the House floor about the series of attacks on Hindu Temples in the United States and growing hate against American Hindus. This is an issue CoHNA has been calling attention to for months.

Since Dec 2023, there have been SEVEN physical attacks -mostly vandalism under the cover of “anti-India speech,” targeting temple after temple-even those founded by Hindus from the Caribbean and those born and brought up in the US.

This is the most glaring example of #Hinduphobia. Worse, despite these repeated attacks, there are no visible efforts to tackle the issue by law enforcement or study the problem by media.

American Hindus are hurting. When places of worship get attacked, how can a Hindu get spiritual solace, practice rituals and traditions and pray with community? We applaud Congressman Suhas Subramanyam for being the voice of justice and ask more lawmakers to speak up and ask for action.

⚠️In a textbook case of Hinduphobia, SAWCC (South Asian Women’s Community Centre) is pressuring the @MTL_Ville, @SPVM & Centre Sanaaq (venue) to cancel CoHNA’s Aug 24 event in collaboration with SPVM: SURAKSHA, a civic education workshop to help Hindus identify & report hate crimes.

⁉️Why is a “South Asian” group pressuring the City of Montreal, SPVM & Centre Sanaaq to silence Hindus from accessing civic education? Why deny an immigrant-heavy community the same dignity every other group enjoys?

🔄 It reminds us of previous attempts by Hinduphobic players - who in 2023 tried to offer unsolicited advice to Hindu students to rename their approved Rath Yatra celebrations. Or the folks who in 2022, objected to use of a Saffron flag to inaugurate Hindu Heritage Month. In 2024 they were offended by Canadian Hindus hosting a vigil for Bangladesh! The list goes on......

👉🏽Dismissing these lived experiences of Hindus is itself Hinduphobia.

✅ We are glad to confirm that, despite these pressures, the SURAKSHA event will go on.

We call on civic institutions to:
✔️ Reject deplatforming attempts
✔️ Affirm Hindus’ equal right to safety education
✔️ Build trust with all communities, Hindus included

Another day-another American Hindu temple attacked - this time in Greenwood Indiana. The sign of the BAPs temple was found vandalized with a 'message of hate'.

We understand local police are investigating and we urge them to treat this as a hate crime and to study this crime against the background of a growing national problem. For the minority Hindu community in the US, freedom of religion feels like an increasingly hollow promise. When our places of worship are attacked with impunity, where does a Hindu go for religious ceremonies, for spiritual solace and for community?
