A glorious frosty view across the Playground to start the week on the day that sees one of the biggest annual events in the @Dunelmia calendar - the House Music Competition 🎶 Thankfully we are in @durhamcathedral not outside this evening! ❄️ Best of luck to everyone!
It’s difficult to convey just how bad training and professional development in education was 20 years ago. This train-wreck of a passage is from a bestselling book published in the 90s and the kind of thing that was uncritically adopted in thousands of schools.
Out of all Rosenshine’s Principles, his 6th (checking for understanding) is the most vital.
It underpins everything from presenting new material in small steps to obtaining a high success rate. Learn why it’s so important 👇

What is the effect of using narrative when planning instruction? This study looked at how different ways of presenting scientific information affect university students' ability to understand and apply what they've learned. The basic findings are that it depends on what the students already know:
"students with low prior knowledge benefit most from embedding educational content into a story and those with high prior knowledge from presenting a narrative context before expository instruction." https://t.co/3WXZSGccjV
Really important message for everyone involved in revision this half term - handwriting notes, past paper answers and flashcards helps! Yes it’s harder than typing, but that’s because you are thinking more. #beseenoffscreen#activatehardthinking https://t.co/g6XUOXoQev
@MrGoodwin23@Mothersaid@MrGoodwin23 and @Bruce_NextLevel this is absolute gold!!! Well done for summarising some really key things that so many people hold onto from their past teacher training. Thank you 🙏 👏

“A generic approach to oracy would be bad. We don’t need a diktat that every lesson must include a debate or speech. But a disciplinary approach, recognising the crucial role of speaking & listening in maths, could pay dividends”: @dmthomas90@AxiomMaths: https://t.co/OjbZihekGe
@KateJones_teach I’ll be over there in a couple of weeks visiting our sister school - really sorry that it won’t quite coincide, but I’m sending them the ticket link! Hope it goes well 👍
What is the impact of ChatGPT on students? It’s worse than I thought.
▶️ More likely to procrastinate
▶️ Memory loss
▶️ Worse academic performance
Whilst more studies are needed, these preliminary results on the impact of generative AI on students are concerning.
There is a broad consensus that learning needs effortful thinking and the connecting of new knowledge to existing schemas. Generative AI completely bypasses that process for novice learners so these results are not surprising.

@Sam_LGibbs @researchEdhome The last @researchEDDur could have been warmer 🥶but the feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. The generosity of speakers in sharing their expertise, not just in their talks, but through chatting, supporting others and listening, is just unique. What’s not to like?
Fabulous sunny morning to take a group of @Dunelmia KS3-5 pupils to @NewcastleHigh for the Inter-School Classics Quiz. The pupils had a great time and represented the school impressively. Lots of wins and lots of learning made for a great outing. #DCSFambition#LatinonaSaturday
@Dunelmia@BeechenRugby Absolutely brilliant effort and attitude from the boys. Great behaviour on show from both sides. 👏👏👏 Lots to look forward to from this team.
