“What emerges is not inner life but its hyperreal double, a curated economy of affect in which the performance of depth replaces the slow, humiliating, unprofitable labour of actually undergoing one’s own experience.”

I really like working with other elderly. It makes me feel like I'm a provocative manic pixie who's encouraging grandmas and grandpas to embrace their sexy selves.
Me, 2009: I appreciate psychoanalysis but the whole Oedipal theory is weird
2025: cuddling with my spouse, 4 year old enters room. Charges at us screaming “NOOOOoO!!” Jumps on top of me, prying my arms away from her dad while yelling “I’M THE MOM!!”
Freud is trolling me
We asked, "where can we learn more about this?" They told us to read a book. But when we tried to do that, we discovered that the book was too long, too dense, too academic, it cost too much money, and it wasn't at our library.
So, they suggested another book, a shorter/cheaper one, with simpler phrasing, and available at our local Barnes & Noble or suburban library branch of choice.
But it turned out, even for this, we simply didn't have the time to read a whole book. We are busy people, with things to do. So, we asked for something else, something that would give us the most need-to-know information.
So, they suggested articles. First, they suggested academic ones, but we didn't have access to all those databases, and anyway, those were still too dense and dry. So then they suggested other ones, ones that we could find on Google, and even blog posts.
But all of this was still simply too much reading. We just needed the highlights, the most important points!
They then provided us with slide decks. There were too many words on the slides, and so they cut the words down. They put everything in bullet point lists. Then, since those lists were getting too long, they decided to show us one bullet point at a time, and put these, maybe once per day or week, on a social media site called "Twitter."
And then, since some of us didn't have the attention even for that, they provided for us the same singular point as before, but written over a pretty graphic, on a social media site called "Instagram."
And then, finally, we smiled, satisfied, because we now had access to all that we would ever need to know.
We no longer had to waste hours of our time reading. All we needed to do was a quick scroll on a couple of social media sites. And we knew that this activity would only ever take us a couple of minutes, at the most! No more hours need be wasted for any of us, ever again, thanks to those who took our requests for accessibility seriously and thoughtfully. We are grateful!
This world is empty to him alone who does not understand how to direct his libido towards objects, and to render them alive and beautiful for himself, for Beauty does not indeed lie in things, but in the feeling that we give to them.
Fine writers do psychoanalysis
“I have often said, and oftener think, that this world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.
This is a solution of why Democritus laughed and Heraclitus wept.” ...
If you've been on the receiving end of an interpretation that shattered you emotionally like a sledgehammer hitting a block of ice, you'd be careful about casually throwing them around yourself
Listening non-judgmentally is not something therapists learn from a book or class. It takes years of work
We can listen without judgment because we have examined the dark corners of our own souls in personal psychotherapy. What you think shocking, we know to be simply human
Therapists who have not done the hard work of in-depth personal psychotherapy over an extended time do not and cannot listen non-judgmentally
They can tell themselves they do, they can play the role, they may even believe it—but it is performative and at some level, patients feel it
Without knowing it, they subtly recoil from areas of the patient’s inner life, subtly signal approval and disapproval, and so close off entire territories to exploration
We cannot face another’s demons with equanimity, curiosity, and acceptance until we have learned to to face our own. We cannot accompany our patients places we ourselves have not traveled
This is one more reason in-depth personal psychotherapy for the therapist is non-negotiable, if we mean to offer in-depth therapy to our patients
Everyone is looking for a bypass around the honest hard work. But there is no bypass
I would like to retract my Freudian jokes comparing vape pens to robot penises. They look phallic, but my object-relations colleagues convinced me it is more like a robot breast, on account of extracting synthetic chemical soothing.
Read lit from psychology and psychoanalysis if you must, but do yourself a favor and don’t read with the conscious aim to find a specific diagnosis for yourself, your loved ones, or your ex-loved ones. You can’t help the unconscious aims, of course. But at least make the attempt.
I’m less interested in your political side and more interested in your Kendrick/Drake side. That says more to me about mental health than your politics. #teamkendrick
“In my early professional years I was asking the question, How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his own personal growth?”
