The business case for a Kolkata–London route is strong on paper. However, the hurdle has always been yield, not volume.
Long-haul nonstops rely heavily on year-round, high-yield business class demand and belly-hold cargo to offset seasonal slumps in economy travel. Currently, Gulf carriers capture a massive share of Eastern India's Europe-bound traffic because their hub-and-spoke models offer unbeatable frequency and competitive pricing for price-sensitive passengers.
For an Indian carrier to make a Kolkata–London route sustainable (even at 3x or 4x weekly), two things need to align:
1. CCU as a regional gateway: Pulling in seamless feeder traffic from the North East, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.
2. Corporate yield growth: Sustained premium-cabin demand from local trade and industry.
With Air India and IndiGo expanding their A350/787 fleets, the operational capability is there—it's now down to whether the route can deliver the margins these long-haul jets require.
How important is domestic feed to long-haul success?
The BLR–LHR pax market is a good example.
In 2025, #Bengaluru Hub draws strong 'behind-feed' passenger traffic from #Goa (GOI), #Hyderabad (HYD), #Chennai (MAA), #Delhi (DEL), #Kochi (COK), #Thiruvananthapuram (TRV), #Ahmedabad (AMD), #Mumbai (BOM), #Kolkata (CCU) and #Bhubaneswar (BBI) before connecting onward to London Heathrow (LHR). As I keep saying, strong domestic connectivity isn't just about filling flights—it's what makes long-haul international services more sustainable and supports year-round network growth.
As #VirginAtlantic, #BritishAirways and #AirIndia continue to serve the BLR–LHR corridor, the strength of #Bengaluru's domestic network remains a key competitive advantage.

The "Beyond passenger feed" matters just as much as local P2P demand. The BLR–LHR market isn't only about #Bengaluru - #London passengers. In 2025, Heathrow served as a gateway for onward connections from #BLR to
#NewYork (JFK),
#Atlanta (ATL),
#San Francisco (SFO),
#Toronto (YYZ),
#Seattle (SEA),
#DallasFortWorth (DFW),
#Austin (AUS),
#Boston (BOS),
#LosAngeles (LAX) and #WashingtonDulles (IAD).
The strength of these onward markets reinforces the strategic value of the BLR -> LHR corridor for long-haul network and highlights LHR's role as a global connecting hub for Many Bangaloreans!
