It’s truly a blow to learn of Peter D. Thomas’s passing. If I could go back and re-read one book it would have to be The Gramscian Moment: Philosophy, Hegemony and Marxism. He uses Gramscis Prison Notebooks and reads them as a political and philosophical exercise. He does not++
Very sad news. Peter Thomas’ work and thought has been deeply clarifying and an impetus to rethinking key aspects of the relation between Gramsci and Althusser. I’m grateful for the occasion in the summer of ‘25 to engage with him in a discussion organized by @DSACommunists. ✊
I regret to inform friends and comrades that Peter D. Thomas, a great Marxist and a leading authority on Antonio Gramsci, sadly passed away from a heart attack this weekend. Rest in peace sir
Pretty telling when it comes to demonic freaks like this that they advocate “sparing hundreds of millions from the communist boot” but have absolutely no qualms whatsoever about nuking Moscow and killing 4 to 5 million people
Operation Unthinkable (Churchill's idea to invade the USSR after WWII) would have been a disaster.
I'm not talking militarily, but ideologically.
With the power of hindsight, any sane person can say that bringing the USSR to heel after WWII, thus sparing hundreds of millions from the communist boot, including people who bravely fought the Nazis like Poland and Czechoslovakia, would have been a good thing.
However, that is taking history in a vacuum, ignoring the culture and people of the time.
Would the Western Allies have won against Russia? Most likely. The USSR, more than any other Allied nation, was exhausted after WWII, having lost most of their veteran troops, countless planes and tanks, and many of their most productive factory cities were still rubble. Especially if America would have just nuked Moscow (although they cancelled their third 1945 nuke after Japan's surrender, but let's say this happens in 1946).
But how would the people of the West have reacted? Would they have cheered on the destruction of the Red plague? No, they would have overwhelmingly opposed it.
Firstly, after WWII, everyone was, quite understandably, tired of war. It was literally the most destructive war for Humanity as a whole. For most people, continuing the war after the surrender of Germany and Japan was utterly pointless. Everyone just wanted to rebuild, recover from the shock, and bury their dead.
Secondly, and this is probably the most important part, communism was no longer the boogeyman of the West. The Allies had spent the last five years shifting gears from "better dead than red" to praising the Soviet spirit of resistance against the merciless Reich. You can't magically turn public opinion around overnight.
Take this from the perspective of the average soldier, let's say a Brit. All of your fighting age male relatives are dead. Your daughter died in the Blitz, suffocated under rubble. You are broken, physically and mentally. But you are just happy to be alive. And while you still see the Ruskies as weird ideologically, you came to appreciate them as vital allies.
Then, all of the sudden, you're called to arms again. You are marching against your former allies, who happen to posses the largest military in the world.
This is not how communism would die, this is how it would rise in the West. Communist parties in Western Europe would have gone from a bad joke, to a genuine power.
the funny thing is that the substantive content is both more significant & potentially more controversial than the title which has attracted all the debate - it essentially commits the Green Party to defending the Palestinian right to military resistance!
@Arbeitologist i gotta agree tho & say that while novara always had their problems i find this recent turn towards “we’re sensible refined + pragmatic, we love mamdani + woke 2.0” to be utterly intellectually bankrupt. just there to get their arse on a seat somewhere in a corporate media studio
Very inspiring to see how many people are reading and changing their minds as a result of this statement. Tomorrow, we have another piece coming out entitled “Palestinians Deserve More” by @thirdintl that I am extremely excited to publish and which develops this point in long-form. Keep your eyes peeled!
@VlStarodubtsev Your views are guided by strategic calculations rather than moral principles. That’s not inherently a problem but it’s misleading for you to pretend otherwise.
@VlStarodubtsev There is nothing principled about the two state solution. Even its strongest advocates present it as a necessary compromise. The internationally illegal annexation of territories by israel is no more “principled” than russian annexations of ukrainian territory.
@VlStarodubtsev The British left is one of the most pro-Ukrainian left wing groupings in the world, constantly advocating for more weapons & military support for AFU & proposing more economic aid packages & investments for the Zelensky government, against the trend for the Western European left
@VlStarodubtsev “Polanskyite”–what a joke 😂 Polansky made a point of avoiding this motion altogether. This issue arose because the Green Party has very strong grassroots democratic structures, and the membership wanted to see the party adopt a clear anti-zionist pro-multicultural foreign policy
