I don’t know. It’s really depressing and I have no idea what the solution is, or it’s too complicated to ever enact. It’s part of the reason I don’t work in the field anymore, though I still encounter plenty of unhoused people at my current job. I sure hope someone figures out a better system than the inhumanity we witness now though.
A 30-second cold blast at the end of your shower cuts sick days by 29 percent. A 2016 trial of 3,018 adults in the Netherlands is the largest cold-shower study ever done.
Geert Buijze at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam split participants into four groups: 30, 60, or 90 seconds of cold water at the end of a shower, or no cold water. They did this for 30 days straight. All three cold groups had 29 percent fewer sick days. The length did not matter. Thirty seconds worked as well as ninety.
The mechanism is thought to involve the immune system. Brief cold exposure triggers a spike in white blood cell count and an increase in metabolic rate, both of which are part of the body's response to what it perceives as a physical threat. Over time, repeated cold exposure appears to train the immune system to respond faster and more efficiently to infections.
The study also found that 91 percent of participants in the cold-water group said they would continue the practice after the trial ended, even though most of them described the experience as unpleasant. They reported feeling more energetic, and the energy boost was the reason they kept going.
Thirty seconds. At the end of the shower you were already taking. The water does not have to be ice cold. It has to be cold enough to make you gasp, and you have to stay in it for a count of thirty. https://t.co/NIowFFXlPz
Someone is selling a 100-year-old mansion in northern Spain that has never left the family.
It's called El Moreno's house. Built in 1921 by a family from the generation of Spaniards who left for Cuba, made their fortunes, and came home to Asturias.
- 368m² (3,960 sq ft) across 3 floors
- hand-painted frescoes on the ceilings
- original modernist woodwork throughout
- floors attributed to Gaudí tile designs
- 1km from the Atlantic coast
- sits directly on the route of the Camino de Santiago
The Indianos were Spaniards who left for the Americas with nothing and came back rich enough to build mansions that would announce their success to the whole village. This is one of them.
It's asking €280k ($324k).
I'm a big fan of houses rich in history, especially for this price.
How much would something like this cost where you live?
Alguien me puede explicar cuál es la hoja de ruta para que una ciudad de 6 millones de personas que tiene un 0,5% de vivienda pública pase a tener un 76%?
Si resulta que es imposible, podemos dejar de hablar de esto como si fuera una solución?
gaps in relationships:
- restaurant gap (going out vs. staying in)
- museum gap (do you want wander vs. sprint)
- travel gap (need to travel a lot vs. fine with 1-2 trips a year)
- money gap (spending heavily vs. stingy)
- living gap (city vs. suburb vs. middle of nowhere)
- ambition gap (highly driven vs. ok with career not being focal POV)
- texting gap (heavy communicator vs. sporadic)
- friend gap (big social group vs. 1-2 friends max)
sure NYT I believe that a “restaurant gap relationship” is not only a real thing but that a phenomenon that has only emerged in the past 5-10 years wrought by opportunistic opentable scrapers, private dining clubs, credit card points, concierge services, and nyc’s increasingly competitive restaurant scene is in fact “the ultimate test of compatibility”
El cachopo es un invento para sacarle la pasta a los paletos de Madrid que van a Asturias. Hay 20 platos de la gastronomía asturiana mejores. Y hace 30 años en Asturias nadie te ofrecía cachopo.
1/ 15 years living in Korea and I have never seen anything quite like the wall-to-wall coverage of the past few days. Every channel, every paper, every conversation. BTS's comeback at Gwanghwamun tonight has consumed this country in a way I think demands some explanation.
@muscleforlife Why do fitness influencers demonise GLP1s so badly?
I’m starting to think it’s cause they’re annoyed overweight people finally have a solution that actually works and means they can no longer flog their expensive programs.
