JUST IN: After two people climbed to the top of the Empire State Building and unfurled a banner on top of its spire Wednesday afternoon, one of the climbers appeared to propose to the other. https://t.co/ngG3jOeTBU
Breaking: Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won his second consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player award, becoming the 14th player in league history to win back-to-back MVPs, multiple sources tell ESPN.
THIS, NBA, IS WHAT YOU GET FOR DISRESPECTING THE TEAM FAVORED TO WIN THE NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BY MAKING IT PLAY GAME 1 AT NOON. LOW NOON. FOR THE TEAM THAT HAD THE GREATEST STATISTICAL SEASON EVER. KEEP IT IN THE SHADOWS, OUT OF THE WAY. JUST HAS "1 STAR." NOW UP 42 ON SUPERSTAR JA.
Shannon Sharpe: "Do you actually think that the OKC Thunder is gonna make it all the way to the Western Conference? ... This might be the weakest No. 1 seed in the NBA in a very long time."
Brian Windhorst: "You're gonna regret those words."
Let’s talk about it.
The NBA released their first rookie rankings, placing Wemby #1 and Chet #2. Here’s how the two alien-giraffes stack up among rookies TODAY:
Points:
Wemby - 1st
Chet - 2nd
Rebounds:
Wemby - 2nd
Chet - 3rd
Steals:
Wemby - 3rd
Chet - 4th
Blocks:
Wemby - 2nd
Chet - 1st
3PM:
Wemby - 4th
Chet - 3rd
If you look at the actual numbers, they are nearly identical. If you watch the games, they are both making an immediate impact.
But as of today, the most hyped prospect since LeBron James is objectively the 2nd best rookie in the NBA.
Because of one word: Efficiency.
Chet is the first player in NBA history to average at least 15ppg while shooting 50/50/90 through the first 8 games of his career.
He has a higher true shooting percentage than Curry, Booker, Jokic, Porzingis, Tatum, Mitchell, Embiid, LeBron, Giannis and KD.
And he’s top 3 in points per shot attempt…in the entire NBA.
Wemby is on a bad team, which hurts his efficiency. Chet is on a good team, which helps his efficiency.
If Wemby and Chet swapped places, it’s likely Chet would struggle more with the Spurs, and Wemby would be even better on the Thunder. But that’s a hypothetical.
In the real world, Chet is currently the far more polished player. And that’s not a knock on Wemby. That’s just a reality.
Chet is 2 years older. He’s had a season to work on his body and learn from NBA players. And history is on his side.
Rookie Blake Griffin missed the 2009-10 season, then won ROY in 2011. Rookie Ben Simmons missed the 2016-2017, then won ROY in 2018. And a rookie Joel Embiid missed two seasons from 2014-16, and then made All-Rookie First Team in 2017.
Awards are often a popularity contest, but this is complicated.
Wemby is truly as great as we think, but Chet has the advantage. Wemby can surpass him tomorrow, but today…
Chet is HIM…🤷🏽♂️
