This morning my wife asked me whether I had any dark stuff, and I admitted that between the pandemic and the Trump administration I’ve been feeling a paralyzing mix of anxiety and depression.
Then she said “No, I’m putting a load of laundry in.”
We are very humbled to have won the Sidney Award for "One Day, One City, No Relief," which took a look at 24 hours of San Francisco's homelessness crisis.
The story, which took nearly 50 journalists to produce, was recognized for its nuance and in-depth approach.
This year we put in a capital funding request to put Lizzie in a Nomex fire suit that fit. (She’s sorta tiny.) Hers alone cost about $5,000, if I remember right.
It’s not “selling subscriptions.” It’s about supporting media that gets information that matters.
Just got this terrific pic of the kickass women on our photo team. (Our guys are kickass too, of course.)
They tell me we have the highest % of women & POC of any major metro.

Our colleague David Wiegand has died. David was a tough editor who believed great arts criticism would preserve a great arts community. He was witty, unapologetic and one of the few people who would tell me when I was messing things up. I miss him a lot.
