Episode 2 - Bradez from another father ✅
The first mainstream artist to accept me was @Flowkingstone_ . One day, he walked into Datz Studio — on top of the Bantama market building — and asked for me. We had a great conversation, and he put me on a freestyle he was doing over a Kwaw Kese beat “for the poppin.”
I was a huge Okyeame Kwame fan, so by extension, a huge Bradez fan. It could’ve ended there. But Stone hopped on two of my songs too. One became Aden Koraa. The other, which we did over traditional drums and Amponsah strings, got lost when the studio hard drive crashed.
It could’ve ended there too. But no. Stone went further, taking me under his wing and teaching me the industry. My first 4Syte red carpet, my first show, my first after-party - all because he carried me along. There was even a short discussion about me officially joining Bradez (I may have hallucinated this part 🤣).
One night, Stone carried me to a house where DJ Black was shooting a Cypher. There were two shoots: one had @Okyeamekwame , @jaysoskillions , @ELgh_ , and @manifestive . The other was supposed to be Bradez and someone else, but the person didn’t show.
Okyeame Kwame suggested DJ Black add me to the second set. Black was hesitant, he had never heard of me and didn’t want a random guy messing up his show. I was hesitant too - I hadn’t come there to perform, just to support Stone.
Okyeame pulled me aside and gave me advice I’ll never forget:
“I know you’re feeling like this is not the right time and that your time will come. But when you’re doing the right thing, every time is the right time.”
Those words still live with me. I hopped on that Cypher and flamed it. Back then, I wrote verses in my head, so I cooked one up on the spot. Till today, I can’t even tell you what I spat but I know it was flames because Jayso wanted to sign me to Skillions after that Cypher.
For years, that Rap Family caught flak in entertainment circles for “not doing enough” for other artists in Kumasi. But like I told Stone the first day we met, I never felt entitled to their help. What I do know is this: it would be mischievous and ungrateful of me not to thank them for what they did for me. From being inspired from afar by their skill to being close enough to understudy Stone.
God bless them.
Sometimes, your big break doesn’t come with fireworks. It comes when someone gives you a shot and you’re crazy enough to take.
