Perhaps females in poorer condition after more strenuous migration with changing weather conditions? Took them for granted.

At our site predation has rarely been an issue with only a couple of instances of corvid raids in many years.

The surrounding farmland is farmed by two conventional farmers for potatoes, cereal, rape in typical rotation with average levels of spraying.
